I’m not a coffee expert and have no experience with pour-over coffee. However, this cafe seems to offer an excellent selection of specialty coffee, and the equipment they use looks fancy and professional. I enjoyed the latte I ordered today, but if you’re looking for good pastries, you will be disappointed as this location pretty much only serves waffles and most are quite sweet. The number of seating is limited, only about four tables available. If you enjoy or would like to try pour-over coffee, I believe this is an excellent location.

Bought two bags of my favourite Estela (Natural), Peruvian coffee beans lately. Today, I heard something wrong with my grinder and when i cleaned it out i found a small piece of stone (about 5mm). It damaged the burrs of my grinder! How could there be stones in coffee beans?!?!?!
Review of beans, not the location. By far the messiest beans I've bought out of 10+ brands. Took forever to clean my grinder after it was done. Otherwise average flavour. Would not rebuy and would not recommend, especially if your grinder has a storage bean hopper like mine.
This place offers one of the best coffees (or even the best), but it is impossible to sit inside because of the fumes from frying waffles. There is little no kitchen hood inside. You and your clothes will be covered with oily gases. No to mention it’s not great for your lungs.
Please, add a vent, install a kitchen hood or start baking waffles in a separated room.

Surprisingly not very good! The 5th Ave location (in the Beverage Please!) was so great, I'm not sure what's going on. Here the coffee was good but not out of the ordinary, a little bland. The store itself a little drab. Again, the other location set the bar so high.
Not terrible at all but will not go back.

I ordered an 8oz americano and got a 12oz - didn't notice until I had left or else I would have returned it for a smaller one. It tasted like a watered down pour-over, no strong flavour or crema.

Prototype Coffee has a very stylish design, making it a great spot to relax. The cold brew is excellent, and they offer a variety of flavor options for their waffles, which is a nice touch. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a laid-back coffee break in a well-designed, modern space. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Prototype is one of my top 5 favorite coffee shops in Vancouver, tucked away in East Hastings. Since it’s a slow Sunday, I was able to drive up here again today after a lunch out. It's truly a hidden gem—just look for the sandwich board as the shop itself is quite discreet. Once inside, you're welcomed by a zen-inspired interior, designed with biophilic moss accented walls, geometrical layout, modern black and wood tones, and soft LED lighting.
On my recent visit, I enjoyed a pour over coffee, an orange latte (which was my favourite for this visit), and paired with a cinnamon waffle. There’s a wide variety of beans to choose from, each offering unique notes, making it a haven for coffee enthusiasts. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, unwind, and truly savor every sip, like experiencing a moment of zen with your coffee.
Highly recommended!

Coffee is not as good as Melbourne coffee but cafe vibes were great and we appreciates the production & latte art. Would have liked waffles to be made fresh instead of taken from display, and matcha to be stronger but that may just be personal preference :) Great overall, thanks!

They had this LONG list of specialty coffees with a very informative person to walk you through the menu.
You can be a coffee brewer yourself or completely new to coffee to enjoy this place!
The menu was interesting and after trying two of the suggestions, we were both in love with our choices!

Great espresso. Very bright and sweet. Nice acidity. Very pleasant cup in a tucked away cafe.

I had a great experience here. The Espresso I chose - after a thoughtful recommendation of the very friendly staff - was very complex and had just the right amount of "funk" for a Sunday pre-lunch adventure.

Cool vibes and a unique atmosphere compared to other places in Vancouver. They have a huge variety of coffee and a cool blue matcha. They can make it traditional too, but they do not offer coconut milk, which is a bit disappointing as I prefer that option since most alternative milks have seed oils and other fillers. The waffles are delicious and come in a variety of flavors—definitely worth trying a few. There’s seating available, and it wasn’t too busy around 10 a.m. on a Sunday, but many of the waffles were already gone. I hope they open a location like this in North Vancouver

Their espresso was strong and flavourful. Got the Codex espresso and it was definitely very enjoyable. Will be coming back to try different ones.
