I enjoyed the espresso tonic made with Guatemala Puerto Verde beans. The roast was delicate yet full of flavor, with a smooth, well-rounded body.
I’ll be visiting regularly and recommend everyone to check this place out as well!

Prototype comes in as one of the top spots for espresso in the city. One of the rare cafes that uses single dose grinders.

Summer in Vancouver feels like a fresh brew — warm, vibrant, and full of character. And today, it all came together at Prototype Coffee. With the long daylight and perfect weather, I stopped by in the afternoon and was surprised to find every seat taken — even at 3:00 PM on a Thursday. The shop isn’t small, but with only a few tables and chairs, I ended up enjoying my coffee on the bench by the wall. That said, it’s clearly a favorite — people just kept streaming in.
As I walked around, I was struck by their commitment to quality — from high-end grinders to instant-heating water taps that ensure precise, consistent brewing temperatures. They roast their beans in-house daily, and it shows.
I ordered the Kenya Rungeto Kii, and it was stunning. Every flavor note listed on the menu was present from the very first sip — bright, layered, and beautifully balanced.
The staff are not only friendly but impressively knowledgeable. If you’re curious about coffee or want to dive deeper into brewing or beans, it’s well worth striking up a conversation — you’ll walk away learning something new.
Prototype isn’t just about good coffee. It’s about passion, precision, and a community that truly appreciates the craft.

Impatient and Passive Aggressive Cashier. If you have selection at the menu then your customer are going to ask questions. The Asian Cashier looks irritated and had to raise her voice and roll her eyes. Coffee is not hot and not that specular. Seriously, I will never come back.

Great pour over. I had a Papua New Guinea that was silky smooth and full of flavour. You could easily taste all of the different notes. Visiting from New Zealand, it was a delight to find coffee on par with back home.

Minimalist design, maximum flavour. ☕🌿
Prototype Coffee is hands-down one of the best hidden gems for coffee lovers in Vancouver. The space is sleek, modern, and calming — with just the right amount of minimalist design to keep the focus on the coffee.
Their selection is seriously impressive. Whether you’re into espresso, pour-over, or trying something experimental, they’ve got you covered. I had a single-origin pour-over and it was one of the cleanest, most vibrant cups I’ve had in the city.
Baristas here are not just skilled — they’re passionate and always down to chat about the beans or brew method. You can tell they care.
If you’re into high-quality coffee and chill vibes without the crowd, this place is a must.

Update in June 2025:
The coffee was lovely as always. However, the staff was not as warm hearted as before, almost isolated when we tried to start a conversion. We missed the passionate ones.
Various single origin to choose from. Awesome pour over. Sweet waffle. Love the vibe and service.

This isn’t your grab and go spot for a sugar loaded latte, it’s a place where coffee is treated with precision, curiosity, and reverence.
Their in house roasting is done in small batches, often with multiple roast profiles available for the same origin, letting you taste how subtle shifts in temperature and time can completely change a cup.
Baristas are thoughtful and knowledgeable, always open to sharing details about the beans or brewing method without ever talking down.
If you’re someone who enjoys tasting notes, experimenting with brew methods at home, or just wants to experience coffee that’s been carefully dialed in, Prototype is worth a visit. Or five.
