We ordered the set menu and everything was amazing! I haven’t been to a place where I was wowed by every dish for a while and the Mackenzie absolutely nailed the menu. The uni pate (the chicken of the sea) was so delicious that we ordered uni pate again at a different place with different seasoning and it’s not even close. Loved the cocktails too!

I can’t say enough about delicious food! The flavours are out of this world. Absolutely delicious. Drinks are good as well. Service was fantastic! Maya treated us very nicely. Food is priced fairly well considering the value and flavours. Drinks though push the bill to a higher level. That’s the only reason we won’t be able to go back as often as we wish.
Highly recommended.

Amazing as always! I had the ‘I want it all’ tasting menu, and it’s the most stuffed I’ve ever felt eating out. It was such plentiful and delicious food. To my surprise, the squid dish was my favourite, because I don’t like a lot of seafood. It was so good. Yvonne our host was phenomenal, and so kind. I’ll be back with everyone I know!

Had a lovely meal there however, our experience didn’t start off great….

We had a very disinterested waitress. We were sat down and when we asked if she could explain the menu she told us that we can take a photo of the menu (which is on a large board). We asked if she could explain a bit more, and she was quite short with us and said “you want me to read through it all”, when there was only like 10 items. My partner said at least what are the appetizers. Anyways it was really uncomfortable and she left us with no help. We were planning on leaving when another waiter (or manager?) came up and gave us all the time of the day and explained the menu in more detail and provided recommendations. We had the octopus which was so tender, beef tongue paired with an amazing bone marrow sauce, steak, and the best dessert I have probably ever had.

Overall, the next server/manager/owner really saved the night and we were beyond impressed with the dishes.

If you are in Vancouver you definitely have to check this place out. The food was amazing and the service was probably the best that I have had at any guide listed restaurant.

We tried The Mackenzie Room for my birthday, and the food truly lived up to the “hidden gem” reputation. The dishes were creative, beautifully executed, and full of flavour, though I will say the portions were on the smaller side, especially for the price.

The only downside was the area and parking. The neighbourhood feels a bit sketchy at night, and they definitely need a proper front-door enclosure or automatic door closure, guests sitting near the entrance were freezing, and people had to stand up themselves just to shut the door.

Once you’re inside, though, the service is welcoming, the space is intimate, and the food is memorable. Despite a few rough edges on the outside, it’s still a special spot worth trying, especially if you enjoy thoughtful, high-quality dishes.

Food is very good. Just that it’s located at a messy area where you may not feel safe to walk around in the dark

Hmm, finally tried the Mackenzie room for my boyfriend’s birthday and hmm, well, it was just okay. I went in with high expectations and the food notes did not quite hit. I give the food 3/5, but wine and service 5/5.

Highlights - chicken of the sea. Great uni butter paired with the squid ink brioche.

Lowlights - everything had a purée or mushy element. Seasoning was also a little off. For example, the cod fish - the lemon sauce was just too overpowering. However for the beef - it needed some pepper and salt.

One of the coolest culinary experiences we’ve had in recent memory. Definitely a special occasion spot based on price, but the tasting menu options are awesome, and the cocktail quality matches it. The staff was friendly and conversational, and clearly cared about and enjoyed what they were doing. And the throwback hip hop playlist was a fantastic touch - my favorite restaurant vibe. Loved it!

To say, my first and perhaps only dining experience at The Mackenzie Room was one of the worst ones, would be an understatement.

First and foremost, the place is incredibly loud. Loud enough that you can’t hold a conversation with the person sitting across from you without having to lean halfway past the table or just shouting. The table next to us being the loudest laughers ever didn’t help, but even after their leaving, it was an incredibly loud space.

The service was alright. No major complaints there.

Now on to the food. We went for their Chef’s menu for 2, and selected a couple of add-ons. The food was absolutely subpar with almost no layer of flavours. Almost every dish had an overpowering sauce element, causing no other ingredients to show through. The amuse-bouche (supposed to have blue cheese and tuna) tasted only of tomato sauce (albeit a good one). The highlighted Chicken of the Sea appetizer didn’t not have any flavour. Beef Tartare tasted of nothing but the dressing. Only saving grace was the cucumber and anchovy salad, which wasn’t enough to fill us up. Lastly the two entrees were so jus/sauce heavy, we didn’t taste any individual ingredients. The steak was chewy and void of any seasoning.

Add to that, the meal was structured without much carb-y elements, and a whole 6 course meal left us wanting more. Such an underwhelming experience that we didn’t stick around for the dessert, and instead went & grabbed some pizza before calling it a night.

If a date night was ever ruined for us, this was it.
