Enjoyed the 7 course tasting menu - everything was delicious!
Love this restaurant. It's the type of place that I would love to keep visiting every season to enjoy their thoughtful and delicious offerings. We went during end of spring and in the heart of summer and the dishes, from entree to dessert were so fresh and fitting for the season. Omakase is the way to go, but come hungry because it's delicately plentiful. Enjoying the soba broth after the soba dish is mind-blowingly good - I'd go back just for that! They were also well versed and excited to share their wisdom with the sake selections and advised drinks that complimented our meals really well. We look forward to future visits.
I wasn’t mad I ate a meal here, but I wouldn’t return or recommend it to my friends.Cool concept for a restaurant by having a seasonal menu that changes daily, but overall this place misses the mark and definitely overcharges. Most of the dishes are quite costly for what you get (quality and portions), and it felt like we were being fed trimmings masked as fine dining. Dumplings are fresh but watery and lack flavour. Unfortunately we were not as lucky as other reviewers with the level of service we received either.
Vey cool Asian fusion with local seasonal ingredients. Well curated wine and sake list, and very helpful and friendly staff.
Farm to table casual dining. We were literally sitting on the patio next to the herb and vegetable garden! We tried both types of dumplings on the menu along with 3 other vegetarian dishes. Everything was beautifully displayed and had excellent flavor.
I've been to Ugly Dumpling twice in the last couple of months, the second time this weekend for my partner's birthday. We got the Omakase, 7 course meal, and each dish was absolutely perfect. Pair the excellent food with a killer bottle of sake and amazing service and you've got yourself a night to remember. We cancelled our dinner plans the next night because honestly, nothing could follow that meal.
We had the Omakase which was $60 per person for seven "courses".Four of the courses were cold dishes. Three of them being small side salads.. And one being some raw fish (at least the fish was good)For a place called Ugly Dumpling, only one of our courses consisted of eight pieces of dumplings, which tasted average at best. Our final savoury dish was a bowl of rice, with dry shredded braised meat. The rice itself was watery to the point that I couldn't even finish it.The final kicker... Was our dessert. Which was five cherries, covered in nuts and custard. If the chef was able to create a distinct flavor profile that complimented the cherry, that'd be fine. However, all I could taste was the nuts.Overall, the food was not worth the price tag of $60. The extra star I awarded this restaurant was for its excellent service.
It was a lazy but exciting day for me on July First Canada day. We have moved into a new phase of covid restrictions. Some people were relived some were cautious but the numbers of covid have significantly dropped. Finally mask have came off. I was walking down commercial street with two of my best friends. We saw this place named Ugly. What an interesting name let’s try it out we said. We went to the front and met a friendly fellow with an Irish accent; he had just one table left. We lucked out and got the best seat in the house! The table was an outside bar top looking out to view the drive pedestrian traffic. We started off with some sake while the server told us about the late night excitement of the local bar across the street. My friends had their featured dumpling which they really enjoyed. They also shared the sweet potato noodle salad which was very light fresh and full of flavour. I had the chicken and rice... sounds simple but it was exquisite. Poached chicken perfectly done with a ginger sauce on a bed of rice with fresh greens. It was everything I needed that day something light fresh simple and easy. I decided why not have dessert. They had fresh local bc cherries in whip cream and candied pecans. It was another easy simple but amazing dish. I remember going to their sister restaurant Dachi and it was just as good. I recommend this place to everyone. The vibe was calm and relaxing. We had a great seat to people watch the Canada festivities. Over all the bathrooms were very clean. The restaurant and kitchen were very clean as well. The service was very personable. The prices were very fair as well. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this place. I hope to come back soon.
Every time i've gone here food has been amazing as well as service. It is on the pricier side but thats what farm to table and being organic gets you! I love how modern yet it still has that authentic asian heritage feel if that makes sense. I'm always excited to try their staff meal since its different every week!
Ordered the weekly take out meal and everything was delicious. The seasonings, sauces, etc. were all on point and showed the chef's talent.

Picked up take out tonight and it was incredible. Each dish was unique, full of flavour and thoughtfully presented. Recommend the Omakase menu. Can’t wait to return to dine in person as their wine and sake list is well curated and the team is kind and knowledgeable Great spot on the drive.
The duck and steak were unreal! Definitely coming back.
Everything we’ve ordered was delicious, especially the aged duck breast and the sablefish! The service was really good too!
Robin our server was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. We asked so many questions and he had all the answers. Great food that changes daily. Best place. Thank you!
Small place with friendly service. It has an Asian fusion feel and the food is delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly, the halibut cheeks were juicy and tender, oysters was fresh, and dumpling is so flavourful. The menu here is always changing so we didn’t even know what to expect. There is a chefs choice option which I would probably try next time around.
