Unsanitary food handling/making practices and abuse from staff towards other employees and the public is rampant. Donut lovers beware it’s not worth it…

Was assaulted by Mel the owner of this shop as I worked for Benjos Tacos. When I confronted Mel about the assault she gave my bosses an ultimatum and they let me go on the spot. She has now been blocking me and my friends on Instagram to avoid accountability. There is a wsbc claim in place to find justice..she uses black donut frying shortening to fry her donuts. I watched her drain the black donut frying oil, clean the tracks of flour, and put back black donut frying shortening to fry donuts to sell. In the taco shop, we’d change our frying oil for chips when it started to look like beer. (Much more frequent) She has a rat problem and refuses to call anyone about it. The dishwasher is broken so the sanitizer isn’t sanitizing the dishes , that come in contact with raw meat with the taco shop there. This isn’t the first time I’ve been assaulted at Empire donuts. Her lead baker Joe also physically assaulted me in the summer and swore at me. Mel from empire is a terrible owner and will do anything to avoid accountability.

I have personally witnessed staff violate Health and Saftey rules while interacting with food on the floor (which I can only assume is worse in the back where no one can see!). I have experienced rude behaviour towards myself from the manager Mel, and I’ve heard rude comments between staff members about customers. I do not recommend supporting this place.

Never know what donuts they have on the daily as social media postings are rare. Not as good as other places in the city.

Donuts are fresh and delicious. Nice atmosphere and great customer service too.The donuts are NOT cheap, 6 were $21.00. If you are on a budget, then I would not recommend this place, definitely not a poor-man’s place.

Beautiful sunny afternoon round 1:45. Donut selection down to a couple fritters, couple donuts. They dont have any coffee available at that time of day? Fritters are stale. Will not return there in the future!!

Tried the brown butter pecan donut and it was pretty good! Big portion sized and seemed pretty fresh.

Hello. To whom it may concern regarding customer service. We just visited the Cook Street location to inquire a 3 dozen donut order for my wedding May 4. At first, staff was friendly; however, a lady came out and passive aggressively told us to order later saying “we don’t entertain orders this early for May, come back in February.”We explained we’re from out of town and just wanted to see what the process was to make an order for an event. The lady then asked the date, to which we said May 4th and wanted to order the special Star Wars donuts. She just dismissed it altogether. “No, you can’t pre-order…it’s the busiest day.”Okay - no means no. But we walked out feeling completely dismissed. Zero empathy. It’s too bad. We loved supporting your business. The headline here - saying no to a customer is fine, but do it with kindness and empathy.Feeling dismissed, especially for a special occasion, is just disappointing for a wonderful small business.Thanks.
