If you are in Victoria and want to learn about the Indigenous land you are visiting, don’t miss out on this opportunity. We had an incredible time learning from Cecilia today.

We had the privilege and pleasure of doing a Songhees Canoe Tour yesterday and I cannot recommend it highly enough! We were a group of folks travleing from all over the world and some of us who live here in Victoria. The tour is run by Lekwungen members of the Songhees Nation. We started our tour, by meeting our guide Melissa (easily found in her red shirt and cedar hat!) by the large Canada sign just below the Visitor/Information Center at 812 Wharf Street. Melissa was an exceptional tour guide! She was warm, kind, and so welcoming. It was obvious that she cares deeply about sharing her family and Nations' knowledge, and also cares deeply about the guests on the tour :). We spent ~ 20-25 minutes on the dock in the inner harbour where Melissa shared such interesting knowledge about Lekwungen people and territories, and how things have changed over the years since the arrival of Europeans in the 1850s. When it was time to board the canoe, Melissa introduced us to the crew, all young people from the Nation. We were given safety briefings, life jackets and instructions on how to paddle. Our skipper Ed was great, and we mostly managed to paddle in sync LOL. None of us were expert paddlers, but between our effort and the Songhees crew we got ourselves to Laurel Point where we stopped to learn more about that place. Then we paddled across the harbour to the point. Our guide Melissa shared that The Delta hotel has been a good partner to Songhees Nation so we got out of the canoe and stopped for a bathroom and water refill break at the Delta and then did a short walk over the point to learn about one of the Signs of Lekwungen (large spindle whorl sculptures). We got back in the canoe and paddled back to the dock. Overall, it was such an excellent experience. I think everyone who can, who either lives on or is visitng Lekwungen territories should go on this amazing tour!!!!

Great conference spaces with friendly staff and a calm vibe. Mid-day traffic can be a hassle from the dockyard on weekdays, but biking is a viable alternative for guests. Great in-house catering & audiovisual available.

I just purchased a new car and needed help with the last part of documentation as to submit to the goverment of Canada for tax proposes they need a photo infront of and ingenious landmark or on native lands, I called for help and was shot down by Songhees to take a photo and she argued with me the whole time. All I needed was a simple photo to send in for proof of purchases for tax purposes according to the government of canada. So much for a wellness centre.

The guides are generous with their time and with their stories. I was so moved by their willingness to share their personal relationship with their culture and this place. As someone who is increasingly interested in history, it was a fascinating tour. But anyone who just loves to learn and be in a beautiful place will enjoy!
