I loved this place when I initially moved to Victoria and went every weekend. It was successful as a vegetarian bakery but after a few months of going regularly I started to pick up that they did not really care for their vegan customers or expanding their vegan offerings in anyway. When they did specials like a pizza night, they never made a vegan pizza option and ignored you if you asked about it. When they made special pastries, they never made any vegan and the Instagram account said vegan ingredients for pastries were too expensive. After years as a sell-out vegetarian business they announced that they would add “local sustainable meat” to the menu - last I checked, a lot more expensive than non-dairy butter. The owner said she was no longer vegetarian as part of the explanation for the change of business direction. Local meats produce more C02 and methane emissions than factory farms pound per pound and are far more wasteful. We could not feed the local population on local meats without drastically reducing consumption to only eating meat maybe once a week, a level that this business isn’t seeking to promote at all. Never mind the ethics of it. The owner also used the business’s social media platform to oppose a rapid transit bus lane being installed in front of their store, where 5 under-utilized parking spots took up the 3rd lane 24/7 even on the days the bakery isn’t open. She later apologized and the dedicated bus lane went ahead. I noticed their bike messenger turned into an ex-vegan during this time too. Is the food bad? No, but some things have gotten worse. The bread could be better at times, sometimes you get a really burnt loaf and it’s just too expensive to justify. They stopped using local Saanich greens in the sandwiches and now it’s iceberg lettuce. I can guess why. The last time I went on a weekend with some non-veg friends, the sandwiches took 45mins to be made. Maybe that was a one off because I really don’t go there ever on my own anymore. I started going to Wildfire for bread. They give off a friendly and chill Gen X co-op vibe and are always offering new vegan things like cake and fresh pasta without any chip on the shoulder.

There were several vegan options at breakfast time. I opted for the vegan breakfast sandwich and it was excellent: tofu, vegan bacon, lettuce, vegan cheese, and more, on a sourdough English muffin. Worth all the calories I now have to burn off! 😂

We have visited Working Culture a few times on are travels and today I stopped in to grab some bread but noticed they had a Vegan sandwich in the fridge so I opted to grab that and not the bread. One of the best Vegan sandwiches. If you’re vegan or not, don’t pass this up!! So much flavour all around. I’ll definitely be back again for another next time. (I took the picture after a quick bite 😀)

Everything here is delicious! I particularly love their bread. Person favourite is the lunch pail with cheese and onion baked into it!! Available on Saturdays as their feature bread.

Incredible bread (tried most) I usually do not like waiting in line for anything but here my addiction overrules the dislike of waiting in line. Hard to eat any other bread once you try theirs.

Loyal customer for life. We never miss an opportunity to load up on sourdough and treats when visiting Victoria from Vancouver. Can’t find a better loaf anywhere! Also the people are incredible. Can’t recommend this place strongly enough. The best of the best.

Love the products here although they are quite expensive. The staff aren’t very friendly and seem annoyed when I order (this is happened a few times). I also noticed this has been reviewed by others in recent reviews. I find it fairly shocking when the owner says to a someone that experienced “rude” customer service at their establishment the owner would argue to not make a public review. That is what things like google reviews and yelp are for. If someone asks me what I think of a business i will tell them exactly this. I’d say check your staff and how they serve your customers. This review is coming from a repeated experience, not just a one off.

So many amazing options! Went for the first time last month and the coffee, sandwich, and treats hit perfectly. Felt all the love put into everything baked. I appreciate so much you are a part of the community here!

Vegetarian options: There are options if you are dairy-free or vegan! I am allergic to milk and they helped me grab a sandwich and treat I could eat :)
