I’ve tried several Shin-Sen-Gumi locations, and this one is definitely my favorite! The tall ceilings paired with lantern decorations make you feel like you’ve stepped into Japan.
The chefs prepare piping hot skewers of delicious barbecue right on the spot, and the passionate, attentive service left a great impression on us.
This restaurant is well-known for its grilled skewers, so we ordered tender and perfectly cooked beef chunks, flavorful chicken meatballs, and fresh jumbo scallops — all of which were absolutely delicious!
As for the udon, I found the soup base a bit on the sweeter side for my taste, but the stir-fried udon had a wonderfully chewy texture that I really enjoyed!

If you're diving into the flavorful world of Shin-sen-gumi in Alhambra, you're in for a treat! The skewer selection offers a hearty mix, perfect for those who enjoy picking and choosing from a variety. From chicken and beef to delightful veggies, each skewer packs a punch of authentic taste. While the size might not be as filling as you’d expect, it’s a great way to sample multiple flavors without feeling overloaded. Plus, pairing it with a donburi makes for a satisfying meal that gets you both variety and volume. Definitely a must-try for any local or visitor wanting to taste a bit of Japan!

My cousin who is a chef recommended this place. Specifically their Yakitori, which were delicious! The shrimp fried rice was tasty as well, though I would have loved to see a few more shrimps on there ?
Their service was part of the pleasant experience as well. Waiters carefully explaining the menu options and offering recommendations to us who were first time goers.
Will come back to try the Ramen next! ?

I've been going to Shin Sen Gumi for over 10 years. My wife's family has gone for 20+. Shin Sen Gumi is fundamentally ramen focused with their Hakata Style Ramen. With the rise in popularity of ramen, the company expanded their offerings. Other restaurants paired their restaurant with another service, Irvine does Udon, Fountain Valley does Yakitori, some do Chanko, etc. this location is an amalgamation of the other restaurants, where you will find a variety of offerings.
What is the core experience when you come to Shin Sen Gumi?
You get Hakata Style Ramen, you can modify the strength of the richness of the broth, the oil level, the firmness of the noodles. Every restaurant has that experience...except for this one. Normally when you ask for extra noodle you can choose the firmness---not this location. It really is a miss to not provide these options, which have been a fundamental piece of the Shin Sen Gumi experience. I could have sworn this location used to offer that service, but I'm an out of towner and can't recall.
Also this location is the first location that I've been to that doesn't offer a kids set. Our kids were disappointed as they usually order that.
This location offers a good variety, but at the cost of the core experience. I'm curious to find how much trouble it causes to offer those options to their customers if the other locations can still offer it.
Honestly, the food is what you would expect from a Shin Sen Gumi. It's great! Parking is pretty good with a lot in the back.
I like the closeness of this location to my in-laws, but would choose other locations for the reasons listed above.
Edit: In response to the owner review. The Hakata Style Ramen says on the menu, "No Customizations".

Used to be the best Ramen in Alhambra, but what make us upset, the store doesn't sell their best ramen anymore in this particular address. Sorry, we will never ever visit this place and tell our friends too that they change their menu from Ramen specialty to yakitori. Sorry Shinsengumi !

Has removed ALL vegetarian and vegan options from the menu. WILL NOT EVEN WORK ON ANYTHING FOR A VEGAN TO EAT. Basically we we told to leave. Been long time customers, been coming here over a dozen times in the past year and the old menu had lots of options.

No ramen any more, so why still exists? And pay attention that they may charge more tips than you actually gave.
This place took their ramen and most of their udon dishes off the menu. This place focuses mostly on their skewers now. As much as I like skewers, I find it hard to make it the focus of my meal. I hope this place survives because they'll probably lose quite a bit of their clientele.

We used to go to this Shinsengumi nearly once a week when we lived in the areas. It had great service and really good food.
We went back for the first time in probably a year last week. Management changed the menu so now it’s essentially just skewers and bar food. Prices have also gotten ridiculous, french fries for $10 when you could get a meal for $15 just a year ago.
Service was still good as usually but the food here has really fallen off. Hopefully they turn it back around but until that happens will not be back.
