Stopped by Shrimp House, a cozy neighborhood seafood joint, and decided to test the waters with the Traveler’s Barrel—two golden fried jumbo shrimp and one Alaskan fish filet, with my choice of a garden salad and red beans & rice as sides.

The Food:

Shrimp: A bit overcooked and on the chewy side. Not exactly the plump, juicy bite I was hoping for.

Fish Filet: More of a cornmeal crust than a crispy beer batter, which wasn’t what I expected. Solid but nothing groundbreaking. Had a slight fishiness, but nothing too strong.

Red Beans & Rice: The true MVP of the meal. Full-bodied, flavorful, and hearty—honestly, I could’ve just eaten a big bowl of this and been happy.

Garden Salad: It was a salad. It did its job.

My colleague ordered the clam chowder and gave it a solid 5/5, though they did note it was “almost too clammy,” whatever that means.

The Vibe:

Definitely a neighborhood staple—locals seem to love it, and it’s got that no-frills, old-school fish & chips feel. With surf & turf and chicken options, there’s a little something for everyone. Would I rush back? Maybe not, but if I’m in the area and craving some red beans & rice, I know where to go.

Ok, so this was my first time here, I normally hate shrimp but the shrimp here, I gobbled up in less then 1 minute, the fish was super fresh and flavorful, salad was very good, service was very good and speed was okay. I would say this would be a nice place to go with your kids, I don’t know what’s on the kids menu but since I thought it was good, it should be for you. Loved the refills and free crackers with the clam chowder, only thing I think should improve, is the breading on the onion rings, and the fish filet, the fish breading was very thin and was not thick enough for the thickness of the filet. Overall, one of the best fish places inland of the ocean!

Parking: Behind the store, and there was about 10 and it was very busy.

Kid-friendliness: Cool decorations for kids to look at, clean restrooms, and the seats are very comfortable for anxious children.

Wheelchair accessibility: Very wide aisles, for wheel chair, when I was there I saw someone in a wheelchair and it looked moveable.

Went here for the first time with some of my friends from work. The clam chowder was my favorite. Good quality food at a great price on the lunch menu. Our server was very kind, attentive to the table, and knowledgeable on what to recommend since it was our first time. Just an overall great experience and atmosphere.

They have the best fried shrimp I know of. It is not greasy. The breading is not too thick. The new owners have done a great job keeping the quality of the product. They have added some variety to the menu. All of the wait staff have stayed and they are really attentive. Excellent accuracy. I appreciate the grilled fish menu. I recommend the Cajun seasoning. It is very flavorful.

Been going here 30+ years... Two times a month and every Friday during Lent. Fishermans Delight was my order. The quality of the "Hand Breaded Daily" fish fillets have Definitely changed over the last 6 months for sure.. Not the same Fish. Asked a few times if the Fish was different and they always said No. But times have changed I guess. I'm not saying everything has changed but, the fresh fish fillets have. Bummer 😕

Horrible, it was the worst shrimp salad I have ever eaten. The shrimp tasted like pure water. It was like they left them soaked in water. They didn't taste like anything. The salad was soaked in water. When I added the dressing, it floated in water. It would have been better if they had given me a glass of water. horrible no taste

Great place that hasn't changed much through all the ownership shuffling. Avoid Fridays during Lent (usually March - April)

Prices have adjusted to match the times
