UPDATE: I had a conversation with both Jill from Atascadero through a text message and Jacqueline from the Bakersfield Union Avenue Smith's Bakery regarding my concern over the champagne bunny cake. After our discussion, I have decided to change my review from a 3-star rating to a 5-star rating and admit that I made a mistake. The reason why the person on the phone had no idea what I was asking for is that I need to remember to ask for "special order" to get the champagne bunny cake. Smith's bakes a coconut bunny cake that is similar but should not be confused with the champagne cake. From my earliest memories, Smith's Bakery has held a very special place in my heart. Situated on Union Ave, the bakery is renowned for its mouth-watering brownies that are simply irresistible. For more than two decades, I've been a loyal customer of this charming little bakery, bringing my grandchildren here to enjoy the bakery's pink donuts and other sweet treats. However, Smith's Bakery means much more to my family than just a place to indulge in delicious desserts. It has become a cherished tradition for us to buy a pink champagne cake from the bakery every year to celebrate my daughter's birthday. And not just any cake - we always get the one that's decorated with "Happy Birthday" and her name. This cake has become a staple item at our family gatherings, and it's hard to imagine a celebration without it. One of my fondest memories of Smith's Bakery is from when my daughter was younger. Her birthday falls around Easter, and every year, Smith's Bakery used to make a Pink Champagne cake shaped like a rabbit out of a loaf pan. It was a delightful surprise for my daughter, and she loved it so much that we started buying both the Pink Champagne Bunny cake and the Pink Champagne sheet cake for her birthday celebration. But this year, when I called the bakery to order the Pink Champagne Bunny cake, the lady on the phone had no idea what I was talking about. I was disappointed and confused, and it made me wonder if the bakery had changed ownership or if they had stopped making the cake altogether. During our conversation, the Bakery representative requested my phone number and promised that someone would call me back. However, despite her promise, I have not received any response from their end yet. I had a good experience, but the lack of response has left me with mixed feelings. I'm giving them a 3-star review.

This is a quality bakery, for sure. But the prices are a little steep. $60 for two dozen smiley cookies? Talk about buyer's remorse! The staff resembles the cast of The Walking Dead until it's time for them to serve you. Then they start the liven up a little bit when it comes to the part about the money ?

Been going since 1978, back then they would treat a renegade quite well took care of them and I've never forgot that so every time I go through Bakersfield I try and stop and get myself a Danish or a lot of the different things that they make can ever tell you how much it brings Memories Back. Pink thankful that I can count on a Danish here and there for poor college guy struggling

The best baked goods ever. Grew up on the cookies and cupcakes. If we got to have a store-cake for our birthdays, we always chose Smith's Bakery.

A Bakersfield institution! Sometimes, it feels as though they have grown aloof and not focused on customer service.

I grew up eating Smiths smiling face cookies. They are my absolute favorite cookie. I live in Tehachapi now, so I don't get to enjoy them as much as I used to. Now it's always a treat when I am able to stop and buy some ?

I ordered a dozen petit fours for my college graduation. The order was never made and now I have to wait until Monday for a refund.

bought a dozen donuts to bring to a get together with friends, both of whom are born and raised here and love Smiths. I've lived here 20 years and never thought they were worth the extra cost. but this time..!!! Over $27 for 12 donuts was ridiculous. Only one was actually good and it was a cake donut that costs extra. The lemon filled one and strawberry filled one were horrible. Dry and the jelly tasted like it came from a jar of cheap jelly. I will never be going there again. I just don't see the attraction to it.

EMPLOYEE, (WHO HANDLED MY CONVICTION QUITE WELL) PLAYED W HER NOSE RING, PRESSED TOP OF DONUT W OUT PAPER SHEET & WITH NOSE-RING HAND, PREPARED ORDER PROPERLY AGAIN AFTER I CLARIFIED, HOWEVER, NEVER WASH HER HANDS. SHE TRIED SAYING SHE USED SHEET, EMPLOYEE NEARBY TRIED SAYING THEY USE PAPER SHEET. "PAP" SAID " NOT TRYING TO BICKER ABOUT IT, I KNOW WHAT I SAW." I GENUINELY APOLOGIZED A FEW TIMES TO THE PIERCED-NOSE EMPLOYEE. WOULD RATHER DEAL W THE GRUMPY OL' LADY W CLEAN HANDS. PRETTY CERTAIN YOU HAVE TO KNOW SOMEONE TO GET DIBS ON THINGS THEY MAY BE OUT OF UP FRONT OR NOT ALL EMPLOYEES ON SAME PAGE. ?

Very rude employees and lackluster service. Employees were talking about other customers while I was trying to pay for the cookies. I understand the holidays are stressful for a bakery, but you should not be saying inappropriate words in front of other customers. Cookies are okay but definitely not worth $20 for six sugar "smiley" cookies.
