I finally found an excuse to stay overnight in Bakersfield so I could try out Wool Growers. I have heard about this historical gem for years. It is listed in a number of Basque sources as one of the top Basque restaurants in the West. It just marked its 70th year of operation, through several generations of owners. My wife has been eating basque food since she was a little girl growing up in Bakersfield. Until last night I had never been. It did not live up to the hype. I ordered tritip for my main which was awesome but everything else was blah! The waiter could not be bothered to keep our water pitcher filled. We asked for more but all he did was remove one of the pitchers. Never brought it back. Then came the soup. Blah. Then the beans, ok! Bread followed which was ok. How do you screw...
