I quite enjoy this sushi spot on University.
I’ve been here about 3 times now and have enjoyed everything I’ve ordered. I definitely recommend the main dishes that come with miso and rice. You get more bang for your buck. This time around I ordered the saba mackerel and it was delicious. The fish comes with seaweed salad, cucumbers, miso soup, rice, and salad. Last time I ordered the hamachi collar and it was def a favorite. Their food is always presented so elegantly. The inside is small so it can get packed easily. Surprisingly it wasn’t that crowded around lunch time on a Monday though. Keep in mind that they do close after lunch service to prepare for dinner service. We were able to get a table for a group of 6 right away. Parking is metered on the street and can be difficult to be find. Staff is super sweet and accommodating. Someone in our party accidentally knocked over some of the miso soup and the waitress happily gave him a new one and also replaced his tray and helped cleaned the table. Inside gives a cozy and relaxing feel and the tableware was nice as well.

This is a beautiful japenese sushi restaurant right on university ave. I came with a book but happened to run into childhood friends at the sushi bar ☺️. The ambience is sweet, dimmed lightening and light music. I ordered the eel unagi, tuna roll, and fresh oysters (they were like firecrackers in my mouth, super flavorful and magical) 🤤 Easily my new favorite sushi spot in the Bay!

Came here last-minute looking for a good sushi place, and it was amazing. Atmosphere was indeed omakase-esque as other reviews state, really small and intimate. Sat at the bar and watched the chef at work, which I would highly recommend. I don't think you would go wrong at all ordering anything off the menu, everything we had was delicious. Portions on the salmon avocado roll were large, and there was never any padding for space in a roll with extra rice... just more fish. A bit on the pricey side, but very much worth it and really close to the best sushi I've had.

Honestly some of the best sushi I've had in the bay.
We went for my birthday and the chef overheard us talking and gave us an awesome surprise with the negitoro we ordered and was just in general super friendly.
I had otoro, the kanpachi crudo, negitoro, and the escolar (butterfish)- all were great.
Small dining space , but they're going great work

Cute little spot with a variety of delicious items. They bring a cute little dish around for you to wash your hands after you sit down with a coupe glass with some snacks. The Tuna Tartare was amazing and the presentation is cute. We got several different things and nothing was a disappointment. I've been looking for the perfect sushi spot since I've moved back home and I feel like I have finally found it.
Update 10/25
I've been a million times since my review and I'm still in love with this place. It's always spot on . The staff, the chefs and the atmosphere is always good energy. Very consistent place and that's very hard to find these days.

Definitely one of the restaurants that uses fine seafood ingredients, but the chef's skill does not match the quality of the sources they use.

Restaurantji Recommends
Extremely high end prices. Fancier presentation and creative menu. Medium grade sushi and preparation.
An unfortunate disappointment given the opportunity.
Mujiri blows this place out of the water at half the price.

I was not the biggest fan of chawanmushi until I tried it at Butterfish. It is SO GOOD, even better than chawanmushi I've tasted in Japan! I now order it every time. The wasabi they serve packs a punch and the sushi might be my favorite served in Berkeley. I also highly recommend the miso cod and the saba. They have a great sake selection and the vibes inside are cool, cozy and comfortable. You can tell that everyone inside is enjoying their experience. A must try!

The idea of hospitality is what restaurants set themselves apart from the lot. This restaurant was no exception. They are one of the best sushi places in Berkeley that serve One of a kind sashimi platters and A5 Japanese wagyu.
Loved having the conversations and definitely loved the selection of local Nama Sake (Sake Den).
Will definitely visit again.
