Poor service. A 20% gratuity was automatically added to my check, which is likely why I didn't receive a single refill on my coffee or water. The chicken was overcooked.

I desperately want to support Homemade. But either they're incapable or they actively hate me.

Before they shut down, I had several bad experiences, but, kept trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I'm done. The food is good, but the service is awful.

We went back, thinking that the new ownership had fixed things. Unfortunately, management is the problem.

We ended up waiting 45 minutes for our food. None of the workers checked in on us. And when I went up to get some more coffee, I got glared at by the the owner/manager until I went back to my table. After finally getting our food, we saw they messed up our order: how do you forget the gravy on an order of biscuits and gravy?

And after seeing several other tables flounder, waiting to get their check to leave, I went up to the counter. The worker there was punching in an order and asked me to wait. I happily complied. She finished punching in her order and left. Leaving me standing there for another 5 minutes until someone else came by to check me out. When we left, my partner and I left laughing because of how horrible the experience was.

All of this to say, don't go to Homemade. If you want great food and great service, go around the corner. Tanzie's is so much better.

I trust that this iconic Cafe will make a full comeback shortly. They have just reopened after a stint and it seems working a few bugs out. I have every faith that they will be just fine. You will not be disappointed at the food .

Such a disappointing experience. My partner & I went to get some late breakfast & were treated like a burden. The food was decent, but the server was rude and inattentive to basic service. At the end, getting our bill, they forced a 20% "service fee" on the tables . I am a healthy tipper when service is good, but being forced without it being clear that they are going to add a "service fee" seems unethical and unkind.

I hope they can be more clear to future customers that they're forcing this fee on them.

I’m happy they are opening back now I probably can get my 92 dollars back now I’ve lived in Berkeley over 10 years never been to the cafe never ate there never ordered there but had a transaction in my bank account for 92 dollars from this restaurant address I didn’t see it til Dec 27th because the holiday so I drove over there ask who can I speak with about a transaction that I didn’t authorize the lady walked to the back to explain what I had said I guess to the manager and came back said he was busy leave my name and number and the last 4 digits of the card that was used and he will call me so I left went to my bank next to file a claim I called back that next week to the cafe because I hadn’t got a call from anyone yet I think on the 2nd or 3rd of January and the message was sorry but after 45 years we are closed for business then I drove back there and papers was on the windows saying they was closed so once you open I will be back

Monte Cristo sandwich had an over cooked chicken breast, collard greens had no flavor
Needed to use the restroom but a homeless man was there first so I went back to my table, a homeless woman was charging her phone and told me to go around her...I don't recommend this place

Really wanted to like this place, the menu looks really good, but on the day we went it took more than an hour for our food to come out due to a rush of takeout orders that backed up the kitchen, and when the food did come out it was cold! meaning it had been sitting there ready in the kitchen and just wasn't brought out to the table. The wait staff was friendly and apologetic, but every table in the restaurant was in the same boat as us - lots of complaints from everyone around us. May give it another try but they need to figure out how to manage their orders better.

The food here is delicious if you can be patient. I’ve mentioned to the owner for years about creating reservations but he insists on first come first serve. Not ideal but if you’re in the neighborhood and don’t mind a wait it’s worth it

They were storing the high chair, where babies sit, in the bathroom. A few feet from the toilet. When we tried to clean it, so much dirt and grime came off that we lost our appetites.

Considering how extreme of a health code violation that is, God only knows what's going on in the kitchen.
