I don't go to Julia's for lunch very often but had lunch there with two good friends recently. The food was excellent (echoed by my two friends) and the atmosphere was relaxed and relatively quiet even the the restaurant was quite busy. I'll be back for lunch.
Julia's takes you back to a kinder, more gentle time which is something we all need these days. The Julia Morgan building is an architectural gem. The food is well prepared although it's a fairly basic menu selection. The service is excellent and Hans always welcomes you like you're an old friend.
We had a very nice dinner at Julia's. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and helpful. We shared a delicious salad that had been divided onto 2 plates for us. The rolls served with butter were very fresh, served warm and had a nice crust and we even had extra ones! (Barbara is writing this review...). Steve had the short ribs and said they were very tasty. I had the vegetarian pasta dish which had so many interesting and yummy ingredients. For dessert, we shared the lava cake, served with coffee ice cream, and that, I must admit, was the highlight of our meal..YUM! The setting is lovely and historic and comfortable.
Took a friend who had never been and he was impressed on the entire building and dining experience.
As always we had a pleasant afternoon eating at Julia's Restaurant. The location is special, the service is gracious, and the menu is varied. The clientele often seems to be UC-related. I'm so happy to see the Berkeley City Club serving as home to a modern restaurant.
The service was a little slow, the chairs were a little uncomfortable, the risotto was a little too salty, and the pappardelle a little too fussy (too many ingredients), but overall it was delicious and fun, a real treat in a beautiful place, and so close to campus and downtown, too!
We've eaten at Julia's many times last time in October, 2025. This time the food was unexceptional and not as good as it was last time. I had the short rib and shared the beet salad and they were not as tasty as last time. The beef was not as flavorful and the beet salad was only satisfactory. My wife had the halibut and said it was okay but not as good as she had hoped.
Absolutely wonderful ambience and decor. Food was excellent. Service was very attentive, beautiful location.
We were a 3 generation party of 5 for my mum's birthday. The minute I sat down I got a nosebleed and our server was right there with a napkin for me and then seemed to evaporate only to appear with ice to help! So sweet! The food felt authentically French. The French onion soup and duck confit were standouts. Everyone enjoyed the meal. It was relaxed and the service effortless. Lovely experience.
First and foremost, this building is extraordinary, if visiting Berkeley, you should go to lunch just to see the property, Julia Morgan had a vision and the details down to the light fixtures are breathtaking. Second, and a very close second, the service via our waiter Hans was something akin to the kind of service my husband and I are comfortable with in our 40 years living in New York. We recently moved to Berkeley and find good service in restaurants hard to find. Hans was attentive, suggested favorite foods, was not in our face, just a lovely human being. We had the fish sandwich and the salmon eggs Benedict, a beet salad, and the bread pudding. The fish sandwich was so exceptional that I've been talking about it all week. Last night (one week later) my husband suggested a Julia Cafe 2.0 brunch, off we go. I only wish my Bloody Mary was of NOLA strength but I understand not everyone wants a boozy brunch.

Always a pleasure to dine at this beautiful historical building, enjoyed the delicious meal and great service.
We arrived early so there wasn't any one around. The food was good and plentiful Our waiter was very busy but he took off photo. We ended up taking some of the food back with us.
We had another wonderful dinner at Julia's Restaurant last night. We had Adrian as our waiter again, which was a really nice coincidence. Like our last visit, Adrian was a friendly, nice, excellent waiter. There were three of us. We all got different entrees and everyone loved their dinner. My wife took a picture of her halibut dinner. She isn't usually a couscous fan, but she raved about it and was glad she ordered the halibut. I had the ribeye steak, medium rare, grilled to perfection. It was presented superbly on a wooden plank and everything was delicious. Our good friend had the braised short rib....another beautifully presented dish that was thoroughly enjoyed. We were very happy to go back to Julia's and look forward to going again soon. Highly recommend! (Earlier review) This review is a bit tardy. My wife and I had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Julia's Restaurant in the Berkeley City Club in August. From the beautiful ambience to the excellent service to the scrumptious food, we give Julia's high praise. We went early and enjoyed walking around the historic building "ooh'ing and ahh'ing" over the stunning architecture and ornate detailing everywhere. Morgan's Bar & Lounge has the most gorgeous stained glass Tiffany lamps (see photo) that fit the decor well. Our waiter, Adrian, was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and fun. The food was beyond amazing. We both had filet mignon (perfectly cooked medium rare) with bearnaise sauce; it was tender and succulent (see photo). The accompaniments, sweet potatoes and spinach, were all delicious. We had never been to Julia's before and now look forward to going there again for another great, special meal
Exceptional evening across the board. Good place for easy beautiful dinner and conversation. The food was exquisite as per usual.
Love the Julia Morgan design and architecture. It feels cozy and special for the perfect tea.
