I ordered the vegetarian ramen. The broth was tasteless. Way too much noodles and way too few vegetables.

I recently visited Tsuruya in Berkeley, CA, and the experience was nothing short of life-changing. Nestled in a cozy mom-and-pop shop atmosphere, the warmth and friendliness of the staff immediately made me feel welcome.

The star of the show was undoubtedly the tonkotsu ramen. The broth was rich and full of depth, clearly simmered to perfection, and the noodles were the ideal balance of chewy texture. Each ingredient from the tender pork to the perfectly cooked egg complemented each other flawlessly—the egg was particularly outstanding, with a creamy yolk that enriched the broth beautifully.

Tsuruya may be small in size, but the flavors and customer service are immense. This place captures the essence of traditional ramen with exceptional skill and care. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking a transformative dining experience.

It takes a lot to leave a five star review, but this place blew that threshold away. Good ramen, not too salty, the noodles were really solid. Mushrooms were a nice touch as well, perfect amount of spiciness. And they filled up my water 3 times

Very tasty ramen, broth was on point, not too salty and the noodles firm, just as I had asked. Will be back.

Just know that even though the restaurant closes at 3pm, they serve the last customer at 2.45pm

Got the spicy tonkotsu ramen and the flavors were balanced (not too oily or spicy). The waitstaff was quick and attentive, and answered our questions about food allergies.

I don't eat sushi, but when I do, I come Tsuruya. Great flavor and fun to eat. It was great having dinner here with family.

Every component in the tonkotsu ramen stood out, from the crunchy wood ear, to the flavorful scallions and onions, to the perfectly chewy noodles. But the broth was the real highlight, it was so rich and a bit foamy on the top.

If you come, please get the matcha panna cotta dessert as well! The flavor is so strong and amazing ??

I’ve tried over 100 ramen shops in the US, and so far, Tsuruya Ramen is the closest thing I’ve found to authentic, Tonkotsu ramen in the US. This is REAL delicious, proper ramen. The few people who gave this place a low rating don’t know WTF they’re talking about.

The tonkotsu soup is thick, viscous, delicious and served piping hot, with a tiny hint of ginger lurking and leaving a thin layer of collagen on my lips.

The noodles were über thin, Hakata-style, cooked katame, or slightly firm, with just the right amount of bounce and bite.

The finely chopped fresh red onions are sweet and complement the crunch of the wood ear mushrooms and menma. I do wish that the portion was just slightly larger, but since the quality was spot-on, I cannot complain. No other ramen shop in the Bay Area can compare. Not Nagi, nor even the large Japanese chain shop two blocks away.

This is my new #1 favorite ramen spot outside of Japan.
