REGAINED my RESPECT and potentially my future business.
Yesterday, if you'd asked me my opinion of Rey Azteca, I'd have told you HARD ? NO, I'll pass, or dishonestly said, "I already ate!"
Prior to the COVID pandemic, I absolutely loved Rey Azteca. Dining in the service was fantastic, polite, fast, warm, and friendly. The food was amazing, fresh, authentic, and consistent. They had this creamy garlicky garlic green sauce that was mind-blowingly flavorful. I'm talking taste bud twisting, hold the entree.. no thank you on a cocktail.. just bring me a straw, and I'll drink the sauce! If they had made it in a margarita, I might have tried it.
I used to stop in, order a large container to go, take it home, and put it on veggies, any meat or seafood, toast, chips, etc., all week long. It was pretty dayum delicious on the variety of entrees you could order it on if you were dining in; a wet burrito, enchiladas, all the things!
BUT THEN, at some point are COVID began, disaster struck!! Strike one. Strike two. Strike three. You're out!! I believe I picked up the sauce a few times, and it was a watery disgusting nastiness I tried to choke down, even trying to convince myself, "It must be me, not the sauce." Unfortunately, it was accompanied by HORRIFIC service, horrible food, did I say bad service and friendly awful food yet?
On my third attempt to give Rey Azteca another chance, well after the pandemic was wrapping up, we dined in. I remember sitting in a booth for more than 20 minutes staring at no less than 5 employees fifteen feet away at the bar counter, chatting away, socializing, taking selfies, and completely ignoring us. I tried to waive them over to take our order and got a, "be right with you from afar." Finally, I got up and took the 4 or 5 strides to close the distance with the menu in hand, and asked if I could place our order there. Yep, that's where they took it!! I can go on and on and on. That service continued! Understand, I worked my way through college working two jobs, a server for 5 years was one of them. I am very very tolerant of a busy restaurant and I'm not entitled. But these folks were doing nothing work related. Thereby came the end of my business.
TONIGHT HOWEVER... after enjoying some time in the pool with friends in their home, my friend indicates she is going to order dinner from Rey Azteca. I shake my head! She does complain a bit that the price has risen from $45 to $66.99 and no longer includes two rolls of toilet paper as it did during the pandemic BUT to trust her and promises I won't be disappointed.
"It comes with a pound of carnitas, a pound of grilled chicken, a pound of pastore, lime rice, refried beans, fresh cilantro, lime, chopped onions, chips, tortillas, red salsa and green salsa (not garlicky green sauce). I concede, "Do we have to pick it up?" She replies, "Nope, they deliver."
Not long thereafter, it arrives. Delicious, fresh, flavorful, substantial, hot, well packed, plenty! Four adults who aren't afraid of calories and a growing 13 year old boy ate beyond content and there was plenty of leftovers. I think they do need to double the rice and beans portions. Those were a little light, but otherwise, that's a really good meal and deal. Not mad at that. I was actually a bit impressed.
I would definitely order that next time I need a meal for a group. It was delicious. Everyone was happy and satisfied. I may have to give them another chance on my garlicky garlic green sauce. I've missed that in my life!!
Vegetarian options: You could make almost anything vegetarian if you know how to order what you eat. Seriously.
Dietary restrictions: Keto? Order your food without tortillas, chips, beans and rice. It's not difficult. Substitute lettuce, or ask for light rice or light beans.

Tried to schedule my son’s birthday celebration here and they refused to accomodate our party of 16. They claim to take reservations. Don’t bother.

Hello all you Fellowing my foid and other Escapades!! Sorry i've been absent for a while.. I moved south to the sacramento area wow what a shock living with REAL TRAFFIC, city noise and CITY folk. Just a different world. But this place makes up the difference with their phenomenal happy hour in Carmichael Ca. The picture tells a thousand words, on Happy hour (3 to 6) At Both locations just a few blocks from each other. The Best $3 Taco and $6 Magaritas. I would just come To drink their incredible margarita mix. Best carnitas i've had since I was in mexico last...

I can't speak for authenticity because it's not my culture but the menu has unique items. They have a molcajete for 2-4 people so I couldn't try it by myself but I'm intrigued. I had Chile pasilla and it was great. Service was also very good, very friendly and helpful. You get chips and your drink immediately. I've never had chips so fast honestly. Only downside for me is the big mug of beer was $13 but that's the world today, still I get mine cheaper elsewhere. Also it's a full bar.
