This store is owned and operated by people who enjoy food and enjoy other people. The foods are marvelous. The store is small, But instead of feeling crowded and cramped it feels magically welcoming and intimate. I took home wonderful brown bread, sausages and lunch meats, real kefir and KVASS! ( If you don't know what that is, you've never lived) I took home yummy cabbage rolls and real blitzes.

But the really special thing I took home from the store Is a magic potion called welcome. In that little space I wasn't just another source of money I was a friend that hadn't happened yet. The smiles, the helpfulness,,the readiness to answer questions and explain made me instantly at home.

I now know three grocery stores that offer delicious and rare eastern European foods. The one in San Francisco is large, has almost everything and is very efficient but it's a rare treat because of traffic, tolls and scarce parking. The one in Concord is closest but I never felt welcome there. This one is worth the extra drive!

Dissapinting 👎 Very RUDE salesperson, acting as if he was there to “teach me a lesson” rather than assist me as a customer. He lectured me in front of another customer after I asked, if it’s ok if I put my purchases (4 items) on a cashier’s counter. I expect a respectful and helpful attitude when shopping, not a lecture on life. I was a returning customer for the past 5 years. Definitely won’t be returning again 🙁

It hurts to see such a good store, once, going down like a derailed steam train. Seems like new owners have their standards way lower than previous people. Multiple items with expired dates, number of items has no expiration date printed whatsoever(fish/number of meat items) and when you open plastic package it smells awful. 2 stars because you can still buy cookies and bublik but I would only go for a see through packages just to avoid any surprises.

In case you're not familiar with this place, it is tucked away down an alley from Redwood Road, which can make it a little tricky to find. Beyond that, they have items from places like Germany, Poland and similar countries from those regions in Eastern Europe. What makes this place stand out from some other European markets that I have seen, is they make many of their pastries onsite. On top of that, they have a decent refrigerator section with meats and other items that might be difficult to find at other places as well, and the staff is really helpful too. It's one of those places that make exploring other food cultures fun and interesting or just familiar for those who already have this established in their life.

Their Eastern European beer selection is fantastic! Which is better, Lithuanian or Ukrainian beer? It might take me 10 years and hundreds of liters to decide, what with all the Polish, Czech, German and Latvian beers confusing my decisions. And most everything in the deli case goes well with beer: chebureki and piroshki pies, hearty picnic salads and slaws. Their wines are diverse and interesting, the cookies are good with their teas, and the frozen pilmenyi and varenyki make a good change from ravioli once in a while. I avoid the cakes and sausages, although they are delicious I need to diet after all the beer and siberian pilmenyi. Well, maybe one sausage...
