When I was a little kid, I went down a waterslide and got a nose full of chlorinated pool water, that burny, overwhelming taste? That’s exactly what every single tea here reminded me of, but with tea leaves added.
I ordered several drinks, and all of them tasted like they were brewed with straight tap water. Tea 101: use filtered or distilled water, especially if you're charging premium prices.
The environment didn’t help either, it was hot outside, and somehow just as stuffy and uncomfortable inside.
As for the food… the chicken salad sandwich was honestly awful. The chicken was brown (??), and the bread was undercooked — like biting into raw dough.
Really disappointed. The drinks to the food to the atmosphere missed the mark

The food is delightful and exquisite, and the service is welcoming. The atmosphere of the dining area gives a sense of peace especially in the morning and even in the afternoon. It makes for a good quick breakfast both sweet and savory. They heated the temperature of my hot chocolate to the perfect level so I didn’t have to wait for it to cool off and was able to replenish my thirst after I consumed my homemade cinnamon roll. 10/10

I had the best brownie of my life at this bakery. I truly have never had a brownie this good.

This restaurant is amazing. The sandwich bread and scones were so fresh. Each member of our group ordered something different, and everything looked amazing and home made-especially the chicken pot pies, salads, variety of sandwiches and teas. We were a party of eleven and they were able to accommodate us sufficiently at a long table outdoors. I really appreciated the service and attentiveness. I know it is difficult to serve large parties, but they achieved this masterfully.
Kate's Teahouse was the site of a delightful lunch for me and a friend. The engaging menu made it difficult to decide on what to order. I was very pleased with my three different, crustless, tea sandwiches along with a fruit salad side. The list of teas is extensive and even as a non tea drinker, I found one to order. The five cup comes in a surprise decanter - quite fun. The wait staff was kind and attentive. The restaurant is locally owned and pridefully cared for.
The place is very cute and friendly. We waited for the fresh batch of cinnamon rolls to come out of the over. When we got the buns they needed a lot more cinnamon and sugar to make them gooey. The ones we had we just buns with icing on top. Others say they have really good pastries, but didn't try them. I would go back to try something else.
Stopped by today and picked up two Pasties- one beef and one veg. They were delicious for our dinner! Also got scones and a turnover. I keep forgetting to go there but have never been disappointed. A jewel in Columbia.
We visited Columbia Kate’s on a hot summer day in July. Sat outside in the shade in their lovely tea garden, and couldn’t have been happier. Candy, our server, was so friendly and helpful. She took great care of us, including the kids, and recommended THE BEST Arnold Palmer - lavender lemonade plus cherry, almond, pomegranate tea. ? YUM!
Candy is awesome! Made great suggestions, very friendly and efficient! Food was so great—4 of us split four menu items…pretty sure every menu item is 5 star!

Pretty chill bakery. They’ll microwave items for you that are in their fridge. I think it’s great that they have runzas
Absolutely delicious chicken pot pie. Served at the Angels Camp Farmer's Market.
I was disappointed, after they brought our individual tea pots t it was at least 5 minutes before they brought out mismatch teacups and saucers; that we had to pass out ourselves. They slowly presented our food, the the people at the head of the table were almost done eating when they presented the food to the people at the end of the table. My food was okay for the price. They do not have restrooms for customers however there is a public restroom a block away
I really wanted to like this place. I tried a few times, but of the handful of times I went in as a Columbia resident, I was treated very poorly. Eye rolls, snide comments, etc.The menu says they carry almond milk and iced beverages, but if you order one, you're made to feel like it's a huge inconvenience. I paid extra for an almond milk drink a few times and still received whole milk. Couldn't drink it. Knew if I went back, I'd get the same attitude. If you can't or don't want to make something, simply erase it from the menu. Then it won't be ordered, and it would have personally spared me several unpleasant exchanges. In all, despite the charming vibe of the coffee shop/bakery, you'd be better served heading to Brown's where the people greet you with a friendly smile. When Brown's was closed, I'd personally drive to Sonora from Columbia instead of hitting up Kate's. Big bummer.
