The sourdough is too hard. I could not even finish the first bite.

Not sure what happened to this location, but it used to be great. Service is subpar food came out cold. We ordered warm beef dip sandwiches. 80% of the tables were dirty with plates and mess on 80% of the tables had to ask the people to clean off tables for us. Our food took over 20 minutes to come out and we were the third person in line to order. The restaurant was about 20% full. They seemed very understaffed. If we’re gonna pay this kind of money for a sandwich and a bread bowl soup, which, by the way they were out of bread bowls, they should at least be staffed and have good service.

I've been going here for years and I'm consistently happy with their soups and sandwiches. I prefer to eat outside and sadly it feels like you're sitting in the parking lot but other than that it's a wonderful experience

Ordered the broccoli with cheddar cheese in a bread bowl. And it was literally more bread than soup. I had to change it for a regular bowl but I was disappointed with this place because besides the fact that the menu is very expensive, the portions are small. If you want to be scammed and left hungry, come here

First time to eat here. Checked the menu and nutritional information prior to going. Amazing how every salad is 600+ calories. Lowest calorie thing on the menu for lunch is the French dip sandwich (520 cal.). When I got to the restaurant lots of people in line so used the self-serve kiosk. First sandwich that popped up was the Deluxe French dip. Looked the same so I ordered it. Looked exactly like the regular French dip my friend ordered. But when I got home and checked the calories, 1050! Not to mention the salt content exceeds total daily recommended values... for one sandwich. And of course, the self-serv kiosk asked for a tip. Really?! On top of everything else it was a chilly day, and the doors were wide open. Everyone in the building had their coats on and buttoned. My au jus was as cold as my water by the time I finished the sandwich. Won't be going back to this or any Boudin SF restaurant in this lifetime.

I spilled soup on myself but then I became delicious too.
I'm just a guy who loves sourdough bread bowls so they get 5 stars from me because they had them and I didn't get food poisoning.

Okay, so Boudin. You know, the place that brags about "baking history into our bread"? Well, let me tell you, they definitely baked something into that bread, but it wasn't history. It tasted like disappointment and regret.
I ordered the Caprese samdwich, and I got a solo performance by Stale Bread. I've had some questionable bread in my life. I've endured grocery store white bread that resembled styrofoam. I've suffered through airline bread that could double as a weapon. But this, this was a new low.
If you're craving a truly historic bread experience, I recommend a visit to the nearest decent bakery.

Horrible food handling skills. Well, I was waiting for my meal. I observed a worker cleaning the tables wearing blue gloves. She was spraying the tables and wiping them down and less than two minutes later I see her near the food, preparation area, putting toppings on someone’s soup with her hands Instead of using the scooper!!!

Also, the quality of the food in this place has been degraded terribly and they keep the air conditioning freezing cold so it’s not very pleasant to sit there and eat. This place is really gone downhill over the years. It’s very unfortunate but they definitely need to have their food and handling skills Looked into.

First time here, very helpful and friendly staff. Food was very good in presentation and flavors. Bread is high quality. And the pricing is very good for being in South Coast Plaza.

Update (12-2024): Haven't been here in a while, seems to look cleanly and well kept. But it seems that the food quality has diminished. Ordered a couple for sandwiches and a bowl of "beef chili". The sandwiches had minor errors but tasted and executed well. The "beef" chili was a travesty, how dare they serve a (cheap) can of baked beans with barely any beef to be seen (see image). I remember the chili being much better than this, looking at previous photos of years passed. If they didn't have anymore "good" chili left, then remove it from the menu at the time of order, rather than opening a suspicious can of chili beans with bits of ground beef. Honestly would have had a better culinary experience with a cup of Wendy's chili, which I consider the baseline of fast food chili. Do better Boudin, you are better than this, especially at an upscale location like South Coast Plaza. FYI: traditional chili is not even supposed to have beans in it, and not supposed to use ground beef, but small diced cuts of beef (I have been a judge at international chili competitions to learn this).

As a first timer we were pretty disappointed. My patty melt was overcooked, unseasoned and not flavorful. The bread was like cheese toast and didnt have gooey cheese, the onions there was very little and not caramelized. The mixed greens were good and the french dip not bad but not worth buying again. The clam chowder was underseasoned and the pototoes werent all fully cooked. Plus they delivered it late and half way through eating the other food. Food looked pretty but it didnt match the taste.

Been to other locations, however, first time having a ham and cheese croissant ($8) It was ok, nothing incredible. Seemed like they prepared night before as the croissant wasn’t flaking like a freshly baked one. Americano is ok, not that flavorful, burnt actually. Wouldn’t go back for breakfast or coffee.
