Sakanaya Modern Kaiseki, located in a hidden plaza in Costa Mesa, is a must-visit restaurant. The interior design may need some updating, but the food is the main attraction. The chef excels in creating delicious dishes, especially the omakase and A La carte options.

One visitor, who is not an expert in Japanese cuisine, highly recommends the restaurant after trying various dishes from the A La carte menu. A standout dish is the wagyu sandwich, which was a favorite among the table. The pork katsu was another hit, being described as juicy, tender, and better than the katsu specialty restaurant next door.

The crab and ikura clay pot rice, as well as the maple ice cream, were also enjoyable. Although the appetizers and sashimi didn't stand out, the wagyu sandwich and pork katsu are worth returning for. The restaurant has a decent parking lot, with additional spots at the back.

Sakanaya Modern Kaiseki focuses on the art of Japanese cuisine, so it's not a typical sushi place with uni, toro, or crab handrolls. Instead, they offer a unique and enjoyable kaiseki dining experience.
