Food: Sushi rolls were excellent and pretty competitive prices. My favorite was the caterpillar. Fish quality was excellent. Avocado and cucumber was fresh and sushi didn't taste like it had sugar in it which was excellent.!
Service: Sucks. They are impatient, rude, and quick to walk away and pretend they didn't hear you. For example I asked if a waiter could remove a plate. He ignored me and signaled at the busboy to pick up the plate instead. Even the busboy realized that was odd.

Genkai Sushi in Dana Point is an absolute gem! I’ve always been a fan of sushi, and everything I’ve tried here has been fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. But on my most recent visit, I tried the lobster rolls for the first time—and I am officially hooked! They were rich, buttery, and packed with flavor without being overwhelming. Easily one of the best rolls I’ve ever had.
The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff are always friendly and attentive. Whether you’re a longtime sushi lover or just starting to explore, Genkai offers something for everyone. I can’t wait to come back and try more of their menu. Highly recommend

Absolutely unacceptable service. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday and ordered right away. By 7:50pm, we STILL had no food, no water refills, and our server had basically vanished. This wasn’t even during the dinner rush — yet multiple tables who arrived long after us were served complete meals while we sat there ignored.
We finally had to get a completely different server just to acknowledge us. And only then did all of our food show up at once — clearly thrown together in a hurry — with zero apology, zero explanation, and not even the slightest attempt to make it right. For a $140 bill, this service was an absolute joke. We did not even walk out of there until 8:30pm… 2 hours for dinner?? I may as well have caught it and cooked it myself.
I’ve been to Gen Kai plenty of times, and this was by far the worst experience. We’re done. Not coming back, and definitely not recommending this place to anyone.

Gen Kai Sushi was fantastic! Even though it was a busy; we came as a group of 4, the food came out fresh and full of amazing flavor. The sushi was top quality, and the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely worth the wait — can’t wait to come back! 🍣👏
Amazing sushi, with many fresh specials of the day - it’s popular and we had to wait a short while for a table, but we didn’t mind and it was really worth it. All the classics perfectly executed, and many new combinations for special rolls. Prices were reasonable. Highly recommend!
