What happened! Is this under new ownership? New inexperienced servers. Smaller amounts of food, not much presentation and prices have gone up significantly! Food was o.k, but not worth coming

slam dunk OG in south Orange county - goes all the way back to 1980 - before most of this stuff was built around here.... Best Sushi Grinds anywhere close to here , da kine Gen Kai serves it up and for a good price - you will love

After many months being away from CA, I stopped by at Gen Kai sushi today. I used to go there almost every week with friends. I always ordered Sashimi Roll, my favorite and master chef did an excellent job, the portion was good and presentation was excellent and price was first $20 then they changed that to $24. Today, my favorite dish was not as close as I used to get, Same master chef but portion was small, less seaweed and the presentation was not good at all. Very disappointed. Btw, the price was raised to $28...very surprised. Decided not to order any more and left. Most places that i know where they cut the food portion and presentations, they lost customer and the word goes around. Today, I saw many new restaurants in the area, I may give them a try!I usually don't white comments but I wanted to do this because I used to go there and things were much better what I saw today. They need to fo back and practice what they used to do, if they don't, they will loose customers..

A very good local Sushi restaurant with very reasonable prices. We went for lunch with another couple. Everyone considered the food to be excellent and enjoyably served. Only slight problem is the restaurant closes between lunch and dinner service and since we came for a later lunch we felt a little rushed in ordering so as to get our food. Our fault not theirs since the hours are well posted. We will be returning.

Going with a contrarian option here (average review is 4.5 as of my review) but can't recommend Gen Kai Sushi. All of the rice with the rolls is soaking wet, and the rolls are pretty basic without enough options for salmon lovers. I'm sad to say, even the miso soup was bad - which I've never really encountered. They also charge for hot tea so keep that in mind.Service was slow, and sporadic.The atmosphere was loud with densely packed tables and basic furnishings/interiors.I wish there were more low star reviews to warn me since I didn't enjoy my visit and the locals who joined me said it had significantly declined since their own last visit years ago.Dana Point, you need to hold your sushi places to a higher standard! It's one of the absolute best cuisine options out there when done right.

My family and I were looking for a sushi treat while in the Dana Point area - willing to spend a bit more than we would have otherwise. Unfortunately, the fish was not fresh. I couldn't force myself to eat it all. And the service was poor - rushed, repeatedly forgotten items, and staff barely looked at us. Such a bummer!

Do NOT order takeout. The prices at pickup are way higher than posted on their website. And to boot, two side items listed online that accompany the dinners were left out of the order. We will NEVER return.

Food wasn’t great but what was worse was that the prices on the website for takeout were not correct. They charged more when I picked up and when I pointed out the discrepancy and asked that they honor the advertised rate, they declined. Earned themselves a 1 star review and lost a local customer for life over a few dollars. Short sighted business.

I suggest sitting at the Sushi bar. The employees are very friendly and fun. Everything from sushi to fresh yellowtail, salmon, & halibut sashimi it's always fresh. Soft shell crab, and teriyaki steak excellent!Parking: Get there early like between 5pm and 6pm. Parking lot is small but I have always found a parking spot.
