Silo Market is one of the props UC Davis likes to point to as evidence of how “good” the university supposedly is. It’s clean, curated, and campus-friendly—the kind of place that photographs well for tours and marketing. But like much of UC Davis, it functions more as a symbol than as proof of real excellence. It’s part of the set, not the substance.

That’s the core issue with UC Davis as a whole. The university is exceptionally good at staging competence—polished facilities, buzzwords, sustainability talk, and carefully managed impressions. What it’s far less good at is delivering strong return on investment or producing graduates with real, durable ability. Tuition is high, bureaucracy is massive, and outcomes often fail to justify either.

Too much of the culture rewards performance rather than capability. Students learn how to present themselves, repeat the right language, and signal affiliation, but not how to think independently or operate effectively outside the institution. The result is graduates who look impressive on paper yet struggle to translate credentials into real-world value.

Silo Market fits perfectly into that pattern. It’s a showcase item—something UC Davis can point to and say, “Look how good we are,” while ignoring the deeper problems underneath. The university isn’t lacking amenities or image; it’s lacking accountability, rigor, and meaningful ROI.

UC Davis excels at theater: attractive sets, confident messaging, and lots of applause. What’s missing is consistent substance behind the performance. And no amount of well-curated campus spots like Silo Market can compensate for that gap.

Their matcha boba was probably the worst boba I’ve had, didn’t taste like matcha at all and was light brown color.. don’t recommend. Prices for the snacks are high. Giving 2 stars just because their sushi is at least good.

I went in to get a drink and use the bathroom but I actually ate at a good food truck. It's pretty crazy to see how the silo has changed since 1999 when I first started working at UCD.
