The restaurant was ok but they could do better. I get it, walked in at 1:30 and they were closing at 2:30 but I think their desire to get out of work on time over shadowed their responsibility to show excellence. The uni should have been served as 2 pieces not one for $30, they forgot the spicy tuna roll in the sushi sashimi special. They forgot our scallops sashimi and the shishito peppers and chicken karrage appetizers that e ordered. You as a customer should not have to make sure they have your order correctly. They should confirm.

I’m not a big sushi fan but this place changed my mind. They have the same stuff as any other sushi restaurant but there is something about the flavor I love. The service is also great. Good sushi, would go again.

Phenomenal flavors and the atmosphere! Gary the owner came over to say hello and check in. Excellent spot for a date night or night out wit the family. Service was great and all at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

Best sushi in California
Extraordinarily fresh seafood and unique ingredients.
I can’t say enough to justify how special this sushi is. The staff and owner were extremely kind, gracious, and welcoming.
The passion of the owners love for the ART of sushi shines in every bite. Truly a gem of a place in this wonderful neighborhood!

Boto Sushi is definitely one of the best high-end sushi places in San Diego. Chef Gary always has many rare specialty and seasonal fish flown in from Japan that are absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. He has a very unique background for sushi chefs and this translates into amazing and interesting flavor combinations that you can't find at any other sushi restaurant in San Diego. He also makes all of his sauces in house and even dishes that no one else makes on their own like monkfish liver appetizer, which is the best you'll find in San Diego.
Highly recommend you sit with Chef Gary and get the omakase. A little tip for you - the Rosy sea perch is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The staff are all incredibly nice. This is definitely a treat-youself, awesome date night place - your neighborhood sushi joint simply cannot compare!

Poor Quality. High prices. Enormously long wait time for food. Not coming back here for sure.

I recently moved from Los Angeles so I've had incredible sushi experiences and have been lucky to befriended some of the best Sushi Chefs in Southern California. As I transition to San Diego a lot of the highly-rated Sushi places on Yelp have largely been focused on Sushi Rolls (nothing wrong with that) but personally for myself the best experience is usually the opportunity to engage the sushi chefs at the sushi bar and listen to how the sushi was prepared vs getting a tray of sushi that needs wasabi and soy sauce. To each their own but I can say that if you want a true sushi dining experience then Boto Sushi Del Mar provides that. It is a cute little restaurant and one of the longest sushi bars I've seen outside of Nobu or Roku. I had Omakasa by Chef Gary and everything was close to perfection with a variety of different dishes aside from the core Nigori sushi and some Sashmi. Each dish was delivered individually and explained how it was prepared by either the Chef or by the great staff. Enjoyed my first real exploration of Sushi in North County and will be back.
I was already struggling to justify the old prices, but now? They’ve taken it to another level. If you’re going to raise prices this much, at least offer something in return: better quality, bigger portions, anything. Instead, I got the same food, the same portions, and to top it off, I nearly swallowed a big sharp bone in my sushi.. For the price they’re charging, the least they could do is make sure the food is safe to eat.
Being stingy and careless won’t get you far.

Overall the sushi was pretty good. The best thing we got was the toro on the Sushi Trust Me option. The mango tango cut roll was really fresh and tasted like lemon and yuzu. I wasn’t a fan of the House cut roll but I think that’s because of the crab. The hand rolls were solid and the service was good.

Unpretentious place with surprisingly good omakase (priced accordingly to the area). Friendly staff, inventive dishes, and great nigiri sushi that’s dressed properly. It’s not cheap, but it has a lot of great stuff flown in from Japan. Trust the chef and order the omakase. It’s worth the splurge.
