Sadly, everything lacked flavor. The empanada dough was chewy. The mussel appetizer was bland. The greens were wilted- the chaufa marisco was ok. We were so looking forward to dining here from good reviews. Service was attentive.
Some of their dishes are really not true Peruvian. For example, my partner ordered a salad with the Peruvian corn (as stated in their menu), they ran out, did not bother to inform him and served it to him anyway hoping that he wouldn't notice. He waved the waiter down and asked why there was no corn in his salad, the answer was that they had ran out and offered to give him the extra chunks of the heart of palms. Also, there were mozzarella balls in the salad which made it also not Peruvian. Would I return? ABSOLUTELY NOT! They are way overpriced just because they are in Del Mar and some of the food isn't authentic.
Honestly this deserves zero stars and it's unfortunate to say that because Peruvian cuisine is something so hard to mess up giving how delicious Peruvian food is however this restaurant truly missed the mark. Starting with not having the green sauce. every Peruvian restaurant has the green sauce and is always a staple . I ordered the lomo saltado (a very popular Peruvian dish) it was so underwhelming. The meat had a spoiled taste, the onions were soggy and not fresh, the overall taste was rancid. We also ordered the ceviche mixto and I really wish I didn't, I'll just leave it at that. I've had my share of Peruvian resturants and this was most definitely NOT IT.
Great fresh food, this is my second time there and my wife and I love it. Great staff and the selections of food are unique and incredibly tasty.
We have been wanting to try this restaurant for years, and it just didn't live up to the hype. Avoid getting seated in the downstairs courtyard. We were forgotten and had to go up and ask for our server because they were “so busy”. The high top table was wobbly and uncomfortable and had stained seat cushions. The sangria was underwhelming and I'm not sure if it even had red wine in it. Seemed like a $38 carafe of juice. The quinoa salad & ribeye were good, but the Lomo dish which was supposed to be filet mignon had quite a bit of fatty pieces that weren't edible.
My wife likes trying new places. I am so glad she made me come here! Service was great, food was fantastic and we will be back!
Great food and service. We were in a strange corner with a door. Pretty tight. But overall good experience.
Overall it was a good experience. Disappointed they didn't have Papas a lá Huacaina as an appetizer and my wife's vegan dish was a Beet Salad that was mostly a Spinach Salad with a couple slices of Beet - my Lobster Raviolis were great, and so was my Pisco Sour. Service was attentive and professional, ambiance was casual and colorful - parking is a challenge downtown Del Mar, but again, overall it was a nice dinner 😎
One of our favorite places in San Diego! We love their food, the drinks and the service, Rodrigo and his brother are the best! 100% recommended
Cute, small, ourdoor patio restaurant. great food. For an early dinner hour, had already run out of a variety of items (drinks & foods), but we were able to find other options
Restaurantji Recommends
Coya Peruvian is a very authentic Peruvian Restaurant with amazing food, drinks and ambiance. Be sure to have a Pisco Sour to start (just like in Peru) and the Ceviche. Rodrigo is amazing!
Great food, try the squid-ink risotto with Mahi-mahi, the lamb stew, or short rib. Highly recommend.
We got there on time and they are still getting ready for us but the hostess seat right away, our server started us with our drink and we decided to get the sangria to share. My wife is hungry so we didn't wait for her to get our drinks, we ask her if we can order our food and we started with the tamales and Yuquitas. The Yuquita is really good and the tamales comes with the salad. We ordered a bowl of soup for my wife but was told that they are not serving soup because of Valentines Day dinner so we went for the roasted beets salad for the wife, the roasted beets is really sweet. I went for the Lamb stew with rice and the spouse wants to try the seafood macho with Peruvian Fried rice and everything is really good and then we ended the dinner with a tiramisu for dessert, soo good. We were ask by the server if the music is too loud for us and we told it doesn't bother us. I told my wife that we been there before when it was called Secret but she don't remember. Definitely coming back.
There were a lot of dishes that weren't available. But it was good solid food. Kind and attentive staff. Great for casual dining
First time here. It was good. Very small place with limited indoor seating. We had the empanada, octopus, and tamale starters. Nothing special but good. 5 of us dined and 2 had the lomo saltado which was tasty, the short rib which was IMO the best dish, tender but a little sweet, the spinach ravioli, and the macho which was good. Decently priced dishes and good, but nothing was a stand out. Would return but not a need to rush back or boast about this place.
