I read the Necessity Coffee story and the thing that struck me was the idea about making a connection. So from the moment I walked in I was watching and feeling for the vibe. It was 100% there, authentic community connection with such a friendly atmosphere. That’s so not true of many coffee shops I try. Kudos to Necessity for living up to your mission. I had a vanilla cold brew from the tap that was really great! I never go to the same place twice when traveling but I may break my rule tomorrow!
Kid-friendliness: Easy atmosphere and lots of outdoor space for kiddos to hang out.

One of the best pourovers I’ve had in the SD area — got their 96-hour anaerobic honey Geisha and immediately had to grab a bag of the beans to take home. The cortados and black tea I’ve tried there have also been awesome.
This coffee shop is a hidden gem in Encinitas. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by friendly staff and the place smells amazing. They have a few seats indoors and lots of seating outdoors.
Their pizza pies were a surprise hit! Very fluffy, not too cheesy and filled with flavor.
Their matcha was also really good - not too sweet not too earthy.
This place is also super dog-friendly!
Parking: Small parking lot but there is tons of street parking

The baristas here were incredibly friendly and enthusiastic, taking the time to walk us through all their options.
The single-origin selections are exceptional—I haven't seen such variety anywhere else. All of their roasts can be used as espresso, not just pour over. They also offer uniquely crafted beverages that stand out.
While the outdoor space could use some improvement, it's still definitely worth a visit.

Visited from out of town and had the best experience here!!! Yummiest coffee and friendliest staff :)
I drank Americano and it smells and tastes really good. It feels light and refreshing rather than heavy, and has a slight acidity and sweet potato taste. After drinking it, the nutty, chocolate flavor, and fragrant coffee scent remain at the end, so it suits my taste?

Down a pretty unassuming alleyway and in a pretty quiet area, the coffee was surprisingly excellent, and the service staff were quite knowledgeable.
Indoor and outdoor seating (shaded), and has public restrooms.
Can personally recommend their draft latte and chai latte.

Necessity is by far one of the best coffee shops in San Diego, especially for people who appreciates specialty/craft coffee. Traveling for craft coffee (especially pour overs) is a hobby of mine, and this place definitely knows what they're doing. I can tell that they put a lot of thought and intention to their work, and it truly shows.
Also special kudos to the owner Jon. He is such a friendly guy and is so knowledgeable about what he does, whether that may be his artistry in brewing a good cup, sourcing and roasting beans, or business marketing stuff. Highly recommend!!
