I give it a four on atmosphere because, though yes the former building was a train station and is quite old, it’s time for some refurbishment and attention to dirt & grime.

We had fond memories of this place housed in the old Encinitas train station, a lovely historic building from the 1880s which exudes old world charm and has been moved to its present location in Leucadia. The ambience is still there but the food can only be described as a bitter disappointment. Its not like we were looking for a Michelin experience, maybe the a little madeleine-esque reprise of the streusel muffins and breakfast we remembered? Instead we got lukewarm huevos rancheros that tasted like a middle-school cook's idea of Mexican fare. Rubbery eggs with melted processed cheese on top, next to some kind of canned beans with generic Mexican chili seasoning. The banana bread tasted like bubble gum and seemed day old, although not as stale as the half- toasted bagel we were also served. I mean just not even the bare minimum you'd expect from any passable brunch joint - classic train station or not. Better off taking a picture of the building and finding a better place to eat!

Pannikin has always had good coffee and delicious treats. The staff I had was smiling and friendly, made a great coffee... the others didn't. Parking is an issue often. It's clean but the bathroom smelled.

Their bakery items were so stale it was hard to believe, bagels were ok. rushed and disorganized at the counter.

For a basic cup of coffee without refill $4, quite expensive though good taste. The eggs nothing special, flavor too basic, and small portion. Essentially your paying for the outside atmosphere that's okay

Great, informal place for breakfast!

Absolutely wonderful experience. Wonderful staff. The man that served us our food was wonderful. The food came out really fast. Coffee was good. The soy chorizo was very delicious and not too hot. They are super busy and they did mess up an order but it was okay. It was understandable. Even being busy they still had a ton of tables to sit at.

When you walk into a coffee shop, you should feel welcomed. Both girls had their backs turned at the counter and didn’t acknowledge us. A simple “Hi, I’ll be right with you” would’ve been the polite thing to say. They also didn’t ask if we wanted our cinnamon roll warmed up. Overall, the service was unfriendly and disappointing.

Wonderful coffee house in a former traditional train station. Great food and service, cute retail shop and amazing patio to enjoy the 🌡️ and people watch along the coast highway
