Easily the best sushi I have ever had in my life. Such a unique and interesting dining experience. Was not expecting such complex and varied flavors with each course. And the chef is a gem!

Shin Sushi is different from your typical Omakase restaurant in LA. As the chef says "it is old-school and casual". I came to the one-Michelin star restaurant with my partner to celebrate Valentine's Day. None of the dishes stood out to me from the night. The fish was not the freshest and was under seasoned, there was no dynamism at all in the flavors. The most disappointing and shocking moment of the night was when one of the nigiri (barracuda) served to me had a piece of fishbone that got stuck in my gums - unacceptable, considering they have one Michelin star and are charging such high prices. This has NEVER happened to me before not even at a regular sushi restaurant. The fish was also quite gamey, especially the sardine nigiri. I found that piece especially hard to stomach. I found it difficult to finish the course and could barely make it through the sixth piece because I got so full and had to ask the chef for less rice; which he was happy to accommodate. I do not think I will be returning and to be honest am quite shocked at how this place received one Michelin star.

Chef is super funny and chatty. He loves explaining details about the food. Strongly recommend arriving on time, be early rather than be late. Sushi pieces were excellent. Appetizer to start was a very interesting mix of items.Dining experience felt very intimate. Only our group and another group were there. Worth the cost. Do not let the external location fool you, it is a lovely experience, and the food is excellent.

I'm not much of a sushi connoisseur, but was passing through the area and stopped here for dinner after seeing it appear on top sushi lists online plus having a Michelin star. The service was attentive, the chef was friendly and entertaining, and the food was really good. Lots of different fishes and textures I wouldn't normally order at a regular sushi restaurant. There wasn't a bad piece, although the trout, spot prawn, and toro were my favorite -- the latter reminding me of the amazing toro that was served at Maido in Lima. Even the scallion and tamago were really good, and the tofu mousse dessert was light and creamy almost like cheesecake. The total price was reasonable too for an intimate dinner.

This was my first time coming to an omakase sushi place. It was so cool! The food was amazing and so fresh. I went for my girlfriend’s bday. It was a little pricey, but it was a super cool experience. The Chef was really nice and kind. He also was down to drink with us a little bit too. He explained every fish and where it came from. Overall, it was a great time!

An absolutely unbelievable experience! One of the best sushi spots in LA, a city full of good sushi restaurants. Service was great, the food was phenomenal, and a fantastic experience all around.

A super intimate dining experience for about $250 per head (no alcohol) depending on what you order and the season. We enjoyed speaking with the sushi chef and it was a delight hearing each story and how each fish and dish was specially and carefully curated from different parts of the world. We thought the whole cooked small crab was unique and it tasted like chips as he described.Dessert is extra and as always, I recommend trying both.I hope to come back for another special occasion, soon! Making a reservation was really easy and the owners are very accommodating. I was able to call on off hours to make the reservation a few days in advance.

The best Omakase experience I’ve had. The chef is extremely gifted and so well spirited. Excellent knife skill and knowledge of fish. Huge respect to him and his wish to carry the restaurant name from his late father in Japan. Room seats 8 only and about 1.30-2hr dining time.

Wonderful omakase dinner at Shin Sushi in early December 2023. The owner/chef, Taketoshi Azumi, thoroughly describes each item served. He typically provides both the English & Japanese name of each item, the seasonality of it, how it might differ from similar types of fish, and other info of interest. They currently have 2 seatings a night, for 6 diners at 5:30 pm and 8 at 7:30 pm. My course that evening started with an assortment of appetizers, followed by 14 pieces of nigiri, and finished with dessert. There's a short but sweet list of sake, wine and beer. The items: * Appetizer tray: conch, ankimo, mushroom, crab flavored tofu, wasabi flavored tofu, sawagani crab & ginger * Medai / red snapper from Japan * Kasugo / baby snapper w/ sakura leaf * Kurodai / black snapper, miso marinated * Hotate / scallop from Hokkaido w/ salt, yuzu * Hon Maguro / bluefin tuna marinated w soy sauce * Masu / ocean trout marinated in soy sauce * Menegi / baby scallion w/ miso soup, very popular in Japan * Iwashi / sardine from Japan, marinated in salt & vinegar * Isaki / grunt fish, white fish from Kyushu Island * Amaebi / sweet shrimp from Santa Barbara, aged 2 days to improve texture * Buri / wild yellowtail, yellow in winter, similar to yellowtail (hamachi) * Toro / fatty tuna lightly seared over charcoal * Uni / sea urchin from Hokkaido * Tamago / egg custard w ume / sour plum * Dessert: tofu mousse (choice of the tofu or coffee jelly) * Added a swell 300ml bottle of Hakkaisan Daiginjo sake Everything was excellent, but the standout items for me were the appetizers, toro, menegi and tamago. The ankimo in the appetizer set was smooth and rich; the toro was super flavorful; the menegi was a first for me, very unique and tasty; and the ume gave a great contrasting flavor to the tamago. I'll definitely return for the omakase dinner, although I'd probably want to try a different season to see how the menu changes. Pro tip: if you want a closeup on how the chef prepares each item, and/or want to engage with him as he prepares the sushi, best to find out which station he uses and ask for a seat there. On this evening he was on the far left as you face the counter, I'm not sure if he's always at that station but it is closer to where most of the fish is kept.

I made a reservation for myself and a friend of mine. When I entered I was already shocked by the fact that there were only a total of 4 people dining there, including my party, on a Friday night! Service (1/5): This is what led me to write the review to begin with; for the whole course, the chef decided to entirely neglect us and only talk to the couple beside us. We had shown no sign of disrespect or said anything wrong either. It is clear that he had some prejudice to us for no reason as only 4 patrons including me and my friend were dining there. My friend tried to be nice and initiated conversations with the chef more often that the couple next to us but the chef just literally showed no sign of interest to talk to us. Then, towards 2/3rd of the course, I politely asked if I could order several more pieces of sushi as I was still hungry, in which the chef started showing a mountain of attitudes towards me and abrasively said something in the line of "I don't like these kind of customers", then obviously declined my request. The chef decided to only show hospitality to the only other party for the whole course and only talked to us maybe 5 minutes before the course ended (the couple in the other party seemed to only converse between themselves at that point). The waiter seemed to feel bad for us being neglected throughout the whole course and was the only person trying to make us feel welcomed and respected. Food (2/5): For most Omakases that I have tried in the past, something unique has always been served. Literally, other than the miso soup appetizer, I can't remember a single thing that was memorable in the course. Extremely basic items such as normal tuna, eel, or trout made into very basic nigiris and and were totally under-seasoned. I don't remember a more expensive cut such as Otoro was being served either. With the sake, we spent a grand total of $340 per person. The 14 small courses are definitely not worth the price, especially with the chef being rude if you request to pay for more sushi. I left the restaurant not only still feeling hungry, but feeling like me and my friend were discriminated by the chef. This chef seems to use a touching story in the past for granted, to cover the poor service, lack of quality food, and small portions. I have no idea how this sushi spot received a Michelin Star but even a lowkey $60 course at Sugarfish isn't any inferior to this. An omakase experience with such a price and award should provide unique food experience and impeccable service, in which the food was not any better than a local sushi joint, with an experience filled with mountain of attitudes from the chef.

Really enjoyed the food as well as the master preparation of each dish. Intimate meal with just a few other diners, eating here is a memorable experience for date night or special occasions.
