In my experience, service at HSG has always been top notch. They have their signature dishes which we found to be excellent. Reliably high quality & attention to detail. A perfect “before-the-performance” choice!
I have written reviews on The Hayes Street Grill in the past so you can look at those reviews and see other comments. I have been eating at this restaurant for 42 years and they are always fabulous. Whenever out of town guests are in town, I always take them to The Hayes Street Grill. When I attend concerts at The San Francisco Symphony, it is my go to restaurant to eat at prior to a concert. Many of the servers have been there since the restaurant opened in 1979. That along makes a powerful statement about how well the restaurant is run. In brief, it is one of the finest seafood restaurants in the world and they always have a great assortment of salads and appetizers. Their deserts are also excellent.
Whenever we attend a City Arts or theatre event near the civic center, we like to go to Hayes Street Grill. The food and service are excellent. Their staff are experienced and take great care of their customers.
We visited in a Saturday night with the theater crowd, so it was harried, but I won't be back. My food was beyond bland—under seasoned, no sauce. My black cod came with a dollop of plain rice straight out of the rice cooker with zero embellishment. All this for $38. Service was brusk. I was eating a piece of bread when the server started to clear my bread plate. “I'm not finished” I said. He said “it's just a plate”, snatched it, and walked off. Seriously?!
We were under a time crunch for a performance and HSG did it again - got us out in time. I had a very tasty paella with a glass of Sancerre. I only with HSG's wine by the glass w.ould have included Vermentino. Perhaps another night. My dining companion just loved her sand dabs which looked plump and very fresh. Can't beat the food at HSG.
The food and service were wonderful. The only issue was that towards the end of the meal, the restaurant became very, very warm. It must have been almost 80 degrees, which made it quite uncomfortable.
I didn't find the experience anything special. The meal was mediocre, I felt a little rushed even though I planned it so I would have plenty of time. The didn't seem terribly accommodating to dietary needs. I probably would not go back as there are other options but it was okay.
Outstanding restaurant! Great food; super vibe; perfect cocktails; delicious food; and fantastic service. Perfect place to dine in the Civc Center neighborhood, especially if you are going to the opera, ballet, or symphony. If you tell your server your "curtain time," he/she/they will time your meal perfectly so you will make that curtain.
We were showed our table promptly. Good was served timely. Old school style, table cloth, attentive waiter and attention to detail. Good was good. We made it in time to our 7:00 show and will return when in the area.
Hayes Street continues to be a favorite go-to pre-performance restaurant with its considerable charm and convivial atmosphere. Sadly, the menu has remained stuck with the exception of some seasonal seafood and appetizer offerings. The tempo of the service is rapid and if you don't take control you'll be in and out in 45 minutes!

Hadn't been here in years and it is still a worthy dining destination. The fish is very fresh and well prepared. It is a good choice pre any event in the civic Center neighborhood.
Service was excellent. I expected more creative seafood options. Food quality's very good. Noise level was high. I use hearing aids and found it difficult to hear across the table. Perhaps need sound adsorption on walls and ceiling. One place I know hung flags from many countries from the ceiling, perhaps to absorb sound.
Pre-opera meal. Quick and friendly service. We were late due to traffic, after giving ourselves an hour to get to the city from Burlingame. We called to tell them and they were great about letting us know we'd still have our table, though arriving 15 minutes late. Good recommendations.
While I really like this restaurant, I was really disappointed. Out of the whole menu (which is not large), they were out of almost everything and only could offer about four entrees. This was at 6:00 p.m. at night after an opera performance, so I am not sure why they were so limited.
The fish dishes - grilled Cod and pan fried oysters were great, the French fries were matchless: crispy with fully cooked interiors, hot and salted just right. Knowledgeable & helpful service and on a Sunday evening it was not fully booked with a low noise level. Perfect.
