I’ve really enjoyed this restaurant in the past, but my last visit left a bad taste. I wasn’t allowed to order an entree dish from the menu simply because it wouldn’t be ready at the same time as my date’s entree dish. The chef prioritized their “curated experience” over my actual request as a paying customer, which felt self-indulgent and dismissive. He refused to serve me the dish I requested, and insisted that I order something that would come out at the same time. I surrendered. The food was great, but it’s disappointing when a chef’s ego gets in the way of good service.
What a delicious brunch, great live music, and efficient service for the Mother’s Day Brunch! Top tip - get the lemon tarts… mmmmm
Nice place to have a quiet drink and a snack, the staff was super friendly and helpful.
We had the garlic and truffle fries and they were pretty nice, however a bit too much garlic for my taste (but if you love garlic, you can't miss this!)
This is by far the worst food you can possibly get at any restaurant that charges these prices.
The best solution is to close down this kitchen and source pizza from the neighboring shop.
Risotto: an indiscernible mass of grey, with mustard. They claim is aioli. Lol. Look it up.
Elk: seasoning burnt to coal. What a waste of a precious slab of meat.
Burrata: solid mass of whitish thing. Terrible.
Fog salad: half dumped mixed greens bag with strawberries chopped by an angry raccoon.

I spent some time here writing over the past few week and really enjoyed the saloon. Great drinks and food, along with an excellent staff. Everyone was great, but Augustina and Cate were exceptionally friendly.

This is painful for me to write. We love this hotel and the staff. We come here for my wife's birthday and love to go to all the popular places around town. We recently ate at the Saloon after having a really nice dinner at Lola the night before. There were four of us..all hotel veterans, caterers, etc. We all ordered the Chefs Course Dinner. Any restaurant can have a bad night but this was beyond that. The opening "Rangoon" was the best part of the meal. Not good when it was not elevated beyond your local Chinese Buffet. The Halibut course was inconsistent and disjointed. One of us had a tasting sized portion of Fish the rest of us had thumbnail portions. It didn't end up mattering as the fish was cooked medium well. The curry in the dish was tasty but it was a "paint" so there was not enough there to do anything for the sticky rice ball. The carrots were delicious however. The main course of a tomato based Risotto was so heavy we each took two bites and pushed it away. Our server asked us about this and we told her the truth. The pineapple upside down cake desert was dry and the sorbet(or whatever it was) was deemed "medicinal" by all. The wine courses were generous and tasty but don't matter much when the food is so marginal. Our server was a sweetheart however. We will always stay at the Holbrooke when we are in Grass Valley but other than "bar bites" I could never see us eating at the restaurant again. Our meals were not up to the standards of such a special place as "The Holbrooke." Perhaps the chef at the "sister" hotel overseeing "Lola" can help there at the Golden Gate Saloon."

Completely underwhelmed. Steak was thin and somehow still under the medium rare I ordered. “Sides” and “chimichurri” were both just bad. No flavor other than burnt grill taste. Do yourself the favor of eating somewhere else. Ugh just so disappointing and $300.

What a treat! Will definitely return. Located in the quaint Holbrooke Hotel conveniently located in the heart of historic Grass Valley California, the renovated restaurant is a treat for the eyes. The service was friendly, helpful and memorable. But the food....rare to find these days an Elk sirloin prepared medium was incredible. We also enjoyed the duck confit pappardelle pasta and Caesar Salad. Be sure to try the house special Manhattan cocktail too. The rich, delectable dark chocolate tort was over the top; of course! Go, Go, Go! Don't miss it.

We love the Holbrook, but must tell you. For the exorbitant price of the food, it should been special. A bit below average. The Bolognese was $38 and luke warm…barely edible. Step up your game if you are going to charge 5 star prices.

They have expanded the menu since the last time I was here. I love new options. I had the tagliatelle bolognese which was excellent. Cocktails are always excellent. Staff and service were perfect.

Drinks are very expensive and weak. When I asked the bar tender to make mine a little stronger - my gin and tonic was basically all tonic - he abliged but didn't tell me he would charge me for a whole other drink.

Great food, great ambiance, great service. Hands down the best dining experience in Grass Valley. Proper craft cocktails paired with creative cuisine. We loved it so much we dined there for breakfast, lunch and dinner on our recent visit.
