From one restaurant owner to another, this place was outstanding!!! Food was absolutely delicious, service was outstanding, restaurant was clean and so cute and the view was gorgeous! Do yourself a favor, take a walk down the pier and stop in for the best meal. You will not be disappointed.

I was in the mood for a good cheeseburger. I went here not knowing what to expect. When I walked in I was immediately struck by the great atmosphere in the restaurant. It’s got a very chill, beach bum type of vibe. Very cool. Ordered my food, and when my food came I was immediately impressed by how great it looked. But let my tell you, it tasted even better. My wife does NOT like tarter sauce and Bud & Gene’s tarter sauce knocked her socks off, it had to be house-made! They have a very good house-made ranch that tastes very dilly. Which I thought was great. The fries though… they were perfectly cooked: crispy on the outside soft on the inside. I can comfortably call them the best fries I’ve ever tasted! The burger was juicy, with a crispy, lightly charred exterior. The bun was great. I had a bite of my wife’s fish and chips and the fish does not taste like frozen fish that’s been fried, it tasted like real, and fresh fish. Best food I’ve had in a while! Not to mention ocean views and a clean environment, and friendly staff. I highly recommend this spot.

Went for a walk on the pier today and it was really windy and cold. I was delighted to see a new restaurant at the end of the pier and decided to pop in for some coffee. What we encountered was really friendly service, great food, and of course, awesome views. So fun to snack on fish and chips (crispy and fresh) and parker house rolls with chili butter (so unexpected and so good) while watching the dolphins play. Highly recommend!

Appreciate the change in chairs from prior picnic benches which was a common issue among one star reviews.

You can't beat the location. We loved eating on the pier. We got the whole fish for two which was good. Perfect for two people if you want to leave a little room for dessert. A little spicy so if you don't like that let them know. Have to pay for parking on the beach. But we found a parking structure a block from the pier in which the first 90 minutes are free.Dietary restrictions: Gluten friendly options

What a disappointment! Today we decided to enjoy the beautiful day and take the walk to the end of the pier to Bud & Gene's. The menu is extremely limited. But we decided on the burger and the fish of the day. After an extremely long wait, the food was delivered to our table by a surly staff member. He never checked back with us as to how everything was, and if he had, we would have said the food was less than par. The burger was over seasoned and over cooked. The fish was burned on the outside and we had to remove at least 1/3 of it to get to the non-charred fish. The only thing that saved the food from a 1 star review was the french fries. They were actually pretty good. But the food was definately not worth the $50+ we paid. The atmosphere was just okay. You order at the counter and your food is brought to one of the many picnic tables available. The table choice didn't leave much of an option for older people or those with physical limitations as the benches are attached to the table and one has to lift a leg up high and over the bench in order to get seated. The music was okay but turned up way too high for the patrons to be able to comfortably chat. I definitely would not bring friends or family to this place. On the upside, the view was fantastic. And I did overhear a woman say the shrimp cocktail was one of the best she ever had. Still not going back...

Horrible experience. Went outside with my family to enjoy the pier afterwards and the cook was apparently on his cigarette break and lit his cigarette right by my 8 & 9 year old kids essentially bullying us with his cigarette smoke to get off of the bench so he could have it. So rude, unnecessary and inappropriate. The food is also way too over priced for the school picnic table lunch vibe. So disappointed. Still miss Ruby's.

I grew up in the area and went to Ruby's a lot before it got closed. Now I'm married and brought my wife to check out the former Ruby's now Bud & Gene. We went all outof the way to get here..... Closed. Come on. There was a sign on the window that said "Open today at Noon", lies. It's fine, I just won't be back in forever and I guess we'll try again. 1 star review for now

Ate here for the first time - definitely not impressed. Menu prices are out of sync with picnic table decor. $16 burger and fries plate was 3/4 fries and a tiny burger that looked like Costco patties. $3 for a 12 oz. can of soda. Flavored tea was good. Wish them well but don't expect them to be in business long. The pier is frequented by families and casual strollers, not folks looking for a $36 fish plate that you eat at a picnic table.

Great casual place to relax and watch the sun go down over the ocean. My friend and I split the Grilled Baja Style Whole Fish for 2 ($36), which came on a platter with guacamole, pickled onions, cabbage with Serrano chiles, and corn tortillas. It's basically a build your own fish taco platter. It was fun and delicious. We had to push aside some of the super hot Serrano chiles, which we picked out of the cabbage, because it was catching our mouth on fire, lol. The fish was de-boned, so it was easy to fork chunks of the light white fish into the tortilla. The servers were friendly and attentive. Once we ordered at the cashier, they brought our fish to our table quickly (within minutes) Their passion fruit ice tea was really good too. The view was to die for. There was a surfing championship going on at the beach, but we got a table no problem at 4:30 pm on a Sunday with no reservations. Looks like they are renovating the upstairs where the bathrooms are. That area previously had a tiki decor, with padded booths. I imagine they are switching to a light, clean, California Beach look like the downstairs. Great place, I will definitely be back. I look forward to eating upstairs when that floor is done.Kid-friendliness: There were a couple families there with kids. The picnic tables are pretty kid friendly, since they can't knock over any chairs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the new Bud and Genes(old Ruby's) on the HB pier! We were a party of 12 and the service was spot on! The verity of food was delicious w/ very generous portions. This is the perfect place for locals to dine and to entertain out of town guests. The views are impeccable!

On a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, my boyfriend and I decided to stroll to the end of HB pier to try the newly opened, much anticipated restaurant. There was one other party of 4 and another of 2 seated at the picnic tables. In other words, it wasn't busy. After reviewing a pretty limited menu, I had some questions. Could I add grilled shrimp to the peach salad? I was told the shrimp is "not cooked". Um, what? I asked, you serve raw shrimp? I was told, no, the shrimp "is not raw, it's just defrosted." My boyfriend, trying to help her, said, do you mean that it's like a shrimp cocktail? Boiled? She said, yes, i guess so. Ok. So....I ordered the grilled shrimp entree and my boyfriend ordered the burger. $50, fine. I told her we'd just take a couple of waters to which she directed us to the water station across the room. I filled a couple of glasses of water then walked to the table. There must have been something sticky on the floor at the water station because I nearly walked out of my flip flops. I approached the lady who took my order and said, there's something sticky on the floor at the water station. I'm sticking to the floor. To which she responded with an eye roll. I said, did you just roll your eyes at me? She said, well, I'm alone here and that's the least of my worries. I said, I'm just letting you know, the correct response would've been something along the lines of: thanks for letting me know, I'll get to that just as soon as I can. There was then another eye roll. So we asked to cancel our order and receive a refund. After waiting about 5 good minutes, the cook (also manager?) came out to oblige. I explained what had transpired and he said he understood. There was no apology. I don't know how this place will stay in business with employees who act like this. I worked in the restaurant business for 15 years. I was truly shocked by my experience. I wish I could say that the food was great but we never got that far. I will give one star, though....for the view!
