Great place with great food and even better service. Love the cozy feel, and is always the go-to when we're feeling like great seafood in HB. The owners, who are also work as host and server, are the nicest people you will ever meet and truly care about their customers. Can't go wrong with the hook line and sinker with some clam chowder.

I have been going to this quaint little restaurant for over 25 years. I have told many family members and friends to go here if they want the best well-priced fish dinners. So here is my much delayed review. If you want the freshest seafood, the friendliest hosts, the coziest setting, great wines and beers and awesome dessert, go visit CATCH OF THE DAY !!!

My wife and I had drove by this place for years and even shopped in the small strip mall plaza that this is located at. If you blink, you could miss it because there is no fancy sign and it kind of almost gets lost within the other businesses. While out and about in the area last night we couldn't decide on what we wanted for dinner and all of the sudden a light bulb went off and I suggested we try this place we have driven by for years and always talked about and give them a try. We walked in and felt like we stepped back into the early 1980's. Not that it's a bad thing, I actually enjoyed the 80's and was my hey day in high school and very fun. The décor is dated with nautical themed items and old pictures of H.B. We were greeted by a very friendly server (John) who is also the proprietor. I had heard a rumor that this place has a connection to the legendary old Fish Tale restaurant / oyster bar in East Long Beach from the 1970's - 90's era. John was the manager there back in the early days and his wife was the lead bar tender there as well. What a small world. John and his wife have owned and operated Catch Of The Day for 33 years now. I guess they are doing something right? Anyway this is a straight up fish and seafood restaurant with many of the menu items that looked to reminisce the old Fish Tale menu items from back in the day. John said all of the fish is fresh with the exception of the calamari and some shellfish items that are frozen. I liked that he was upfront and it was his way of suggesting that it would be better to order the fresh fish. My wife ordered the salmon and I ordered the halibut and you get the option of how you would like it cooked. We chose the charbroiled option. The entrees came with choices of soup or salad and 2 choices of side dishes. I also forgot to mention they brought bread and butter to the table before ordering. We enjoyed the house Chardonnay with our meal. When the food was brought to our table, everything looked great and the portions were descent and larger than you would get than most of the newer fish / seafood places like Kings Fish House or the Market Broiler. The charbroiled fish was cooked perfect and had great flavors. My wife and I were very delighted with our experience. This is a no frills place that reminded me of back to the basics of what old good restaurants were like. It will not win any awards for modern décor and you will not be served a small trendy decorated plate with petite portions of fish served by a young sleeved tattooed server with a curly Q moustache. It also isn't a place that I would suggest to take a date to for a night on the town meal to impress her with. What you will get is a good quality fish dinner, priced very fairly, in an incognito location. We look forward to coming back soon and enjoying a healthy fish dinner with friendly service.

We have been coming here for years. They have, by far, the best, freshest fish in the entire area. You can pay much more, or go to someplace fancy, or you can have the best at Jim’s restaurant. My favorite is the macadamia crusted halibut.. it is to die for. Service is family owned superb.

I adore this restaurant! They have superb food, they have a rich menu, The chef in that restaurant is very trained, I like very much tasting all their dishes. The food is always of high qualtity, the attitude towards the visitors is very good too. I often eat in this restaurant and I not even once was unhappy. I recommend this place.

Oh man, It was Thursday night and we were looking for a great burger place, some place new n fun. This place is pretty awesome. The service was fast and the burger was big and juicy. Can't complain.

The servers and owners were so friendly I couldn’t believe I was still in California. Everything is homemade, and delicious. A ton of food for the price, and it was all very very good. Nice homey atmosphere. Will absolutely be going here again, can’t recommend enough.
Good food, price a little higher than expected, really old appearance that doesn't look like anything has been done for decades. Depressing atmosphere!

First time there, the owners John and Lyn are very friendly. He had been at the same location for 32 years and a lot of his customers have been going there for a great number of years. We ordered the crusted halibut which was outstanding and you get three sides. The food was delicious and the prices very reasonable. I would have given them 5 stars but the cushions in the booth were worn out years ago. The interior needs freshening up, that aside we will go back but next time we will request a table with chairs.

Went there because of the reviews thinking they should have good fish. I sure was wrong. I ordered the sand dabs , a small,very delicate, tasty fish. It came with a coating that was burnt and thicker than the fish , making it inedible. When I pointed this out to the management, they did not care. They have no idea how to cook fish. They also do not have most things on their website menu. The place is not kept up. The booth cushion that I sat on had a very uncomfortable repair. I will never return.

We went here on the 26th of July 2019 me my mom and my brothers, the food is all very good quality, just remember the portion sizes are slightly larger than you'd expect so keep that in mind. Staff and service was excellent I recommend you eat here
