RUDE STAFF. Acted like they were in purgatory and would rather be anywhere else. Odd, since it appears to be a family operated business. Employees appeared to like each other only slightly better than they did their customers.
Date shake was overpriced and painfully sweet. No date flavor at all, just some weird grainy ice cream in a cup. Could not be sucked through the provided straw, but spoons were free, so I guess I gave the one star for the free spoon, since there was no other reason they deserved any stars.
Bought 2 kilos of dates - Very high price for average quality dates. I remember the OLD Shields where the top quality dates were identical, perfect, little works of art. These were picked by indifferent hands with little care or talent for sorting.
The bible-thumper vibe on their website made me slightly apprehensive, but the staff were bored, indifferent, and equally hostile and aggressive toward all the customers regardless of age, creed, ethnicity, or public display of religious affiliation. Customers entered the salesroom evidently happy, and left looking confused and mistreated.
I doubt that Shields actually harvests dates anymore. The trees were all trimmed to prevent fruit production, but the Sun Date farm down the road was in full swing harvesting dates.

Two people at front counter & it took 10 minutes to order a Date Shake. The lady ahead of me was indecisive about which box of dates to buy & the people at the front counter seemed mystified about it. You only have 1 choice on the date shake...LARGE size...TEN DOLLARS(!). I can remember when Hadleys in Cabazon had $2.00 fresh, made to order date shakes. Date Shake was tasty (so gave them a2 stars for that) but it was pre-made & retrieved from frig.. Did not take the tour but my overall impression is this place is a tourist trap.
We checked their website AND we called. “Yes, we’re open” they said. Upon arriving after many miles, they told us the gardens were closed, but that we were welcome to spend money in their gift shop.
