The Cafe at Shield's is a beautiful little patio, mostly shaded with umbrellas on a hot day, with a musician performing unobtrusively on the weekends. The food, coffee, and drinks are good. Try the chilaquiles, yum! The table service at the gets a bit backed up on weekends, so give yourself time to wait for a table, and time to wait for a server, and time to wait for your food. The paths through date farm were closed due to high winds, even though it was very still and perfectly sunny when we went on a Saturday morning.

This is the perfect place for breakfast and lunch in Palm Springs. I enjoyed my experience here so, so much and can’t wait to go back.
It’s full of locals and lots of families, you can tell many of the people dining there have been coming for a long time. It’s super casual but has such a wonderful, special ambiance. There was live music playing, and the patio is so well covered and shaded that it’s very comfortable.
The food was amazing, the portions were huge, and it’s very reasonably priced.
We had to wait about 45 minutes for a party of two at 12pm on a Saturday. Anywhere with a wait that long is clearly popular for a reason, so we didn’t mind waiting. You can also walk around the fun main store while you wait, which makes the time go by fast.
Great menu selection, it was honestly hard to decide what to order because everything sounded so good. And breakfast is served until 2pm which is exactly what I want on the weekend!
The service was great and our waitress was super nice and food came out promptly.

Our two plates came out room temp, rice just a tad much on the garlic. My pancake could've been warmer as well. The date jam was actually tasty, but the cut dates were a lil harder then I was expecting. Service could've been a lil more attentive as well.

We didn't actually dine at the cafe, just ordered date shakes and sat at the counter. I'd been coming here for years but it's been about 25 years since my last visit. Wow, has it changed! Expanded into a sizeable gift shop, etc. That's all good, but the main reason to come is for a fresh date shake. What a disappointment! The shake is so sweet like straight sugar. I asked, and the server pointed to the date sugar crystals in a container on the bar counter. They no longer mix fresh dates into vanilla ice cream. It tasted nothing like the old fashioned shakes I remember.

I’m gonna be honest, I had high expectations for this place and it just wasn’t very good. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. When we arrived (Saturday lunch time) it was a full house and we were told it would be a 20 minute wait, it was only 10 so great start.
Our server was good and attentive and the outdoor space was well shaded with live music playing.
We ordered the stuffed dates. They were decent. We also ordered the date burger and the pulled pork sandwich. Our serving plates came out still dirty, which wasn’t great but these things happen.
Our food came out and looked mediocre, and didn’t taste much better. I don’t know if we just came on a bad day but the burger was pretty bland, and the pulled pork just tasted weird. Also, the ketchup on the table tasted weird but maybe I was just hating at this stage. Overall, just not very good food.
When we left, we decided to grab a date shake, the younger male at the counter must’ve been having a bad day, he threw my straw onto the counter in front of me, again nothing crazy but enough to cement a not very good experience.
The date shake was decent.
I don’t often leave bad reviews and I don’t think this is necessarily a bad review, but this place certainly missed the mark when it came to dining experience overall.

Skimpy on the hash browns. Veggie omelet was fabulous
It was very disappointing considering how high I held Shields at. As Hispanics, we came in and were told we’d be served in 20 mins. It took about an hour to get called and STILL had to wait another 30 mins just for a serve to come by. We told him our order and didn’t even get waters to begin with. Multiple parties came by first and were served first instead of us. I really felt like we were discriminated against considering the parties that were being served first and we had already arrived way before. Although Simeon tried to make it up to us, as soon as we declined their offer , he IMMEDIATELY left. I want to emphasize how fast he left when he “offered” to make it up to us. He obviously didn’t care to make it up considering we were a party of 6 that was willing to tip big on a place that has been traditional for us but instead of respecting our loyalty; we were disrespected, underserved, and disappointed. What a shame truly .

We were in Palm Springs for a tournament and kept hearing about getting a date shake... we are so glad we went to Shields. The garden walk was beautiful and very well thought out. the store was nice, a bit pricey but lots of stuff to look at. The date shake was delicious, not sure why people have negative reviews on it... it was thick and yummy!
