$60 for Ramen dinner for 2…. And terrible service. I won’t be going back to Shinsengumi anytime soon.
I ordered salad and another appetizer which came after my ramen was served and I had to ask my server twice about it.
Also Ramen is not so impressive. With so many fresh noodle ramen choices we have at Mitsuwa / Tokyo Central at fraction of Price, not to mention other ramen restaurants available in Irvine, if you are going to charge premium price, please provide better service than what you are providing.
I don’t feel the same energy I used to feel when I went to Shinsengumi. And also your service level… no wonder your restaurant is half empty these days.

Hi
I was really disappointed at this location again. I use to be a regular at this location because the food was good, but now the restaurant smells like a public bathroom, the food took forever to get to us and it tasted horrible 😒 I do not recommend this place at all.

I love their curry udon, but it’s messy to eat with all the splashing haha. Not a fan of the cod roe udon, the texture is gritty not creamy and it’s warm instead of cold. Also it is just wayy too spicy for my liking. I prefer creamy mentaiko udon preferably with an onsen tamago. The side sausage is delicious.

Always very good, the ultimate curry is my favorite. Good prices too--a little more expensive, but definitely worth it.

I literally drive up from San Diego just to get their ultimate Curry udon, the best I've ever had.

I think their grilled dishes are better than their ramen.
Without hesitation, I ordered the Overload Ramen Combo, which came with generous portions of meat!
The two meat slices on top of the ramen broth were alright. However, the pork belly, pork cutlet, and pork spare rib included in the combo were incredibly satisfying. The pork belly, in particular, was a perfect 30/70 fat to lean ratio, tender and juicy.
Since they were having a collaboration promotion for Okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake), I decided to try it out.
The Naruto collaboration with Otafuku seasoning brings to mind the 1983 Kinnikuman (キン肉マン) Japanese manga promotion for Yoshinoya's beef rice bowl.
The promotional dish was the Hakata Modan Yaki, and it came with a sticker Naruto as a souvenir. The lightly pan-fried ramen had a texture that was soft yet slightly crispy, but the sauce was overly rich and salty.
The Chicken Karaage and the soft-boiled flavored egg were alright, but in terms of both texture and sauce, other places like Little Ferry Sushi and Meiji Seimen do it better.
I think their BBQ is better than their ramen.
Without hesitation, I ordered the overloaded ramen set with generous ingredients! The two pieces of meat floating in the noodle soup were okay, but the stewed meat, fried steak and fried bones included in the set meal were very enjoyable. Especially the stewed meat is 30% fat and 70% lean, tender and juicy.
I happened to come across a joint promotion of okonomiyaki, so I ordered some to try.
This Naruto promotion of seasoning brand Otafuku reminds me of the 1983 Japanese anime Kinnikuman (キン肉マン) promotion of Yoshinoya beef donburi.
The promotional meal is Japanese ramen pancakes and comes with a souvenir Naruto sticker. The slightly fried ramen has a soft yet crisp texture, but unfortunately the sauce is too strong and salty.
Fried chicken and soft-boiled eggs were okay. But regardless of the taste and sauce, other restaurants like Little Ferry Sushi and Meiji Noodles are better than it.

I was really looking forward to this meal, but it’s honestly a letdown. I specifically ordered the ramen with light oil, but it’s ridiculously greasy, like they ignored my request entirely. And to make things worse, the gyoza is overcooked. way too crispy and dry instead of that perfect balance of crunch and juiciness. Kinda ruined the whole experience.

I've been going to this place since 2019. Even if it's a long drive, I found it worth it because it's the only place I know that doesn't make their curry udon watery. I'm not surprised the prices went up, but they took out the size options for the udon, and what's worse is their curry udon no longer has a thick consistency. In the pictures I've added, you'll notice the curry udon now looks lighter compared to the older photo (I can't edit captions on photos so I meant to put 3/4/25 on the most recent pic).It really does sadden me that the quality of food has lowered, and I have to pay more for it. It's no longer worth the long drive and I think it's better if I make curry udon at home...

With locations throughout Orange and Los Angeles counties, Shin-Sen-Gumi has been a mainstay at Woodbury Town Center where many of its former neighbors have unfortunately gone out of business. The staff is always very welcoming and efficient with seating and orders. The menu offers everything from cold/hot/fried appetizers, udon and ramen to rice dishes.
On our recent visit, I tried the Spicy DanDan Men off their seasonal menu. It's described as a "Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen w/ rich spicy sesame miso flavor, topped w/ seasoned ground pork & beef, shredded chili pepper, cilantro and green onion." The broth was flavorful but IMO not spicy enough (although admittedly my heat tolerance is high). I wasn't given the option to customize the ramen set-up so the noodles weren't to my liking and I felt like they skimped on the pork & beef inclusion. Overall it wasn't my best choice of ramen but I know they have better options on their menu. I also supplemented my meal with a Soboro Bowl which is always a favorite. I also recommend trying the Nan Kara (deep fried chicken cartilage) if you have the palate for it. The Shin-Sen-Gumi Restaurant Group was first established in 1992, so you can expect this restaurant to continue operating well into the future!

Broth is very good. I personally like the thicker bouncier noodles though. Chashu was dry.
Service is on point. Efficient and attentive.

DO NOT ORDER UBER EATS/POSTMATES HERE. When I went to pick up my order, their power was out. I asked if I can get a refund for my order OR at least try to cancel my order on Postmates on their end. They couldn’t even do that and refused to be helpful. So I paid for my lunch and left the restaurant empty-handed without my order. I am disappointed in the service and lack of acknowledgement.
We (3) ordered 3 bowls of udon, one of them was traditional one which cost $25, taste was ok not worth the price, we tried cucumber side dish, it added plums sources not the taste we expected. Overall we compared the quality, taste and value of the dishes, service with another high end Japanese restaurant in Irvine, we prefer another one and the total spending was about the same but much higher quality than what we had at Shin SG. And once you had tried Japanese cuisine in Japan, you know what you’re looking for…3 stars only for Shin

Ramen is okay. Could be better. And it’s little pricey. Small portion size.
Great taste!
