I really wanted to love this place, because it's in a wonderful location, with wonderful places to hang out. Unfortunately, the bagels, in spite of the origin story of the hard-working founder, appear to have been made with recipes from Noah's Bagels-great squishy pillows of dough (my least favorite bagel in the world. I was born and raised near the Lower East Side of New York, learned to bake my own bagels, and tasted bagels from all over the US and Canada. With this background, I’m confident when I say that Boichik Bagels really are as good as the New York Times declared in its review. These are not the bagels served in most places on the West Coast. They are smaller. They aren’t salty. They are best not toasted. The crust is perfectly and consistently chewy — a detail that other bakeries...
Ordered my usual egg bagel with light cream cheese and used my homemade jam. It never disappoints. Got a bakers dozen to go 13 for $36, and can make my own for weeks. They’re fantastic sliced and frozen then toasted to revive them. Cinnamon raisin and sesame are also fab.
