This is the first time ever in my life to get charged for tap water and it’s ridiculously $3 per person. Never had such charge in the US over 10 years. The restaurant wouldn’t tell that the tap water is charged until the time of the bill. I thought it’s a requirement for restaurants to provide free tap water and it’s not legal to charge. The wait time for a grilled squid was extremely long, I felt about an hour, just sitting there and wait. We couldn’t even keep a spoon with us lol, the owner/server was asking them back while we were waiting for squid and quickly washed the spoons to serve the next pair of customers. There were only 8 seats in the restaurant, I would expect they have a least 8 spoons. I didn’t care about spoon issue that much, I’m mainly mad about the tap water charge, but since I’m mad, I hated it lol

I had a very disappointing experience at Shoya Izakaya. My friend and I ate here yesterday, and shortly after the meal, my friend got food poisoning. This is very concerning and makes me question the hygiene and food safety standards at this restaurant.

The atmosphere and service might be okay, but food safety should always be the top priority. I sincerely hope the management takes this issue seriously and improves their quality control. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place based on our experience.

I do not know why this restaurant got all these 5 stars reviews.
The waitress is mean, unwelcome and with very unhappy expression and never smile the whole time during we had dinner last week.
we only order a few disks and it took 2 hours to get the food, and they are not even tasted good.
Even the simple Oden tasted so salty and no flavor.

We later tried another Izakaya restaurant (Hachi).
We ordered 5 disked and all the food were ready in 10 to 20 minutes and they are very tasty.
The service is also very good in Hachi.

I will never back to Shoya again.

Real slow but real good food. Personal favorites are yam and rice, dashi tomago and grilled hokke.

Insanely slow, we wait an hour for raw octopus wasabi; one hour and half for cheesy potato.

The waitress was unwelcoming and cold. Maybe she didn't mean to be rude, but her facial expression and the way she talked were condescending. It’s funny though to see people behaving arrogantly without any reason.

Just stumbled upon a hidden gem! ? I've been on the hunt for an authentic Japanese restaurant specializing in Oden, and I finally struck gold! This place is a haven for Oden enthusiasts like me. The flavors are exquisite, and the ambiance is simply charming. If you're a fan of Japanese cuisine, this spot is an absolute must-visit. Kudos to the chefs and server for their mastery in crafting this traditional dish. I'll definitely be back for more!

You wouldn't be able to tell from the almost hidden outside entrance but this place is great! So many great food and sake options. The chef and the server are both

Decoration was kinda mix of kitchen and Japanese restroom. Couldn’t inspire appetite. The lady waitress was kinda negligent or ignorant, refused to give any food recommendation. She claimed everything was good and I could not go wrong with anything. It wasn’t true. I tried like ten dishes. Half of them were too salty or over cooked. Oh don’t forget to ask about price and additional fees. She buried some price without telling you upfront. Not a pleasant visit all the way from out of town.

?? JAPAN (via Eat the World Los Angeles) - A two person husband and wife team take care of absolutely everything at Shoya, a place that runs like clockwork. The closed sign flips to open precisely at 18:00, and there are only nine seats so customers are asked to make reservations to allow them to prepare adequately. Your table settings will be laid out when you arrive. Clockwork does not necessarily mean speed, as almost every dish is prepared by one chef. Come with a couple hours to spend and enjoy this leisurely pace as you will most likely order at least a dozen small dishes and they will come to you at a well-timed pace. Draft beer, hot and cold sake, and plenty of shochu options make this a proper izakaya, so order your favorites and settle in for a very unique experience that you will not want to ever come to an end.

Really good. cooker tried his very best to cook every meal. all are very delicious but be mindful, it will take 3-4 hours to serve your food?

This restaurant has a hidden rule that says customers can only stay for two hours. If you overstay, the woman at the bar will make it clear that you are no longer welcome with her rude facial expressions and unkind words. Also, you are required to spend at least $30 per person, and they charge $3 for every cup of water without telling you. I've been coming here for a few years despite all that, and I was shocked and deeply disappointed when the woman refused to give me a reservation because I stayed half an hour too long on my last two visits. This was when closing time was near and there were plenty of empty seats. The lack of communication and the apparent discriminatory treatment of customers left a bitter taste in my mouth. Avoid this place unless you're comfortable with receiving poor treatment despite spending your hard-earned money.
