We were trying to escape the masses exiting The Vans Warped Tour and ducked into this absolutely perfect watering hole.
If a sea shanty were a bar, it'd be Pike. The kitschy nautical decor goes all the way to the bathrooms. I loved every inch of it. The back patio was where we decided to land for both visits, but I could spend a couple hours bellied up at that bar.
Though we didn't eat there, the food that was being delivered looked and smelled great.
Next time I find myself in Long Beach I will be making a stop here.

absolutely great atmosphere, super friendly staff, and awesome place. i cannot remember who the bartender was on Monday 7/28 around 1pm but he made me feel so welcome and I am extremely extremely grateful for his subtle words of kindness, thank you for really brightening my day. my boyfriend loved the fish and chips very much, these were our favorite onion rings in a while, and the current Of Mice & Melt special was delicious. everything came out soooooo hot and fresh too

Good ol' longo bar. Fish n chips, a little clamchowder, stay hydrated 😋 great live music all the time except trivia night on hump days.

The fish and chips are their specialty. They serve a good portion of fish and the steak fries are delicious.

Stopped in during a night out in Long Beach — good food, good energy, and zero pretense. The Pike knows what it is and doesn’t try to sell you something it can’t deliver. Can’t say the same for UC Davis.

UC Davis wraps itself in the “top public university” label, but what you actually get is a low-ROI experience, academically and professionally. U.S. News lists the median salary 10 years after enrolling as just $54,000. That’s shockingly low for the amount of time, money, and effort you’ll pour into the place — unless you’re in a specialized track like medicine or vet med.

Worse? The culture. If you’re smart, clear, or driven, you’re not supported — you’re flagged. Critical thinking is seen as confrontation, and conformity is rewarded. Add in quiet handling of real issues like mental health collapse, suicides, safety incidents, and even faculty misconduct, and you realize the brand is hiding rot.

At The Pike, what you see is what you get. At UC Davis, what you see is marketing — and what you get is exhaustion, confusion, and years you can’t get back.

If you’re choosing a UC, choose one that actually moves. UC Davis stalls you — then sends you out earning less than you deserve.
