Definitely a spot for coffee, but as for the food, I have to be honest I grabbed a sandwich, and it was probably the saddest one I’ve ever had. I’ve had much better sandwiches in Orlando. The pastries and coffee are decent, but the sandwich? I asked for no mustard, and once it was gone, I understood why they hesitated. Without the mustard, there’s basically nothing left just about 3 ounces of meat and a super thin slice of ham.

The last time I went to Cafe Tropical was about 10 years ago and it was AMAZING! I went there on Sunday and I was blown away on how much it had changed since the last time I was there. No more fresh pastries, no more huge selection of baked bread. It was condensed to a small display case of what looked like day old bread. I ordered what used to be my usual, a cubano and orange juice, when I saw the price of the juice, I removed it. The atmosphere was different, the pictures were different, the faces were different, and the heart of the food was gone. When I got my sandwich I walked out quickly, thinking that the first bite would change my mind, but no. My sandwich was burnt, the ingredients didn’t taste the way they used to, it was just heartbreaking. I used to brag about this place and recommend it on the daily, but unfortunately that’s not gonna happen anymore. Thank you for the memories Cafe Tropical, but that was my last visit.

This is a wonderful establishment with great service, a unique ambience, and an environment that seems to bring together community.
I stopped in on a Thursday morning at 9:30am to pick up an iced coffee and a chilaquiles burrito for my husband. Not having had my coffee yet, I forgot to request no crema and no cheese. Oops. 😅 So I went to the counter to order another chilaquiles burrito, and the service member asked if it was to replace the first one. I said yes and admitted to making a mistake on the order. Without me even asking, they offered to give me a 50% discount which I very much appreciated.
Great spot and I’d be delighted to return! Highly recommend :)

Food yummy, & nostalgic. Atmosphere cute outside seating. Server gave an attitude to me because apparently I was supposed to get up & grab my drink myself. I had no idea since it was my first time coming. I proceeded to apologize and told him it was my first time after I had asked him if I was supposed to grab it myself. Since I could read his face and his attitude in tone. It felt so awkward my friend rushed to eat her food and asked to leave. I'll never return. It was a little embarrassing to have her witness that at a place I had told her was nice to come eat lunch at. The food is great. Other cashiers were great. That guy though, wish I would've asked for his name. So if you come here order to go, or be prepared to grab ypur food after you order. I was sitting outside newscasts it was crowded to wait inside for my food. Just be aware of them calling your name I guess.

The BLT is one of the best sandwiches in LA especially when you add egg. Everything there is delicious. So grateful the team saved this local institution and imo the food and Bevs are even better now.

I’ve seen Tropical through three very different eras: first, as a grimy, beloved, authentically Cuban coffee spot; then, as a hip café serving excellent coffee, sandwiches, and pastries that were downright transcendent; and now, this current iteration, which I just don’t love.
The pastries aren’t up to par, and the food is hit or miss. The coffee remains solid (especially when Manny’s on bar), but what really gets under my skin - though it’s sadly emblematic of this new wave of Silverlake coffee shops - is the atrocious service. Every single time I go, there’s a long, snaking line out the door because the cashier is deep in a meandering conversation, usually with a friend who’s popped by, chatting as if it’s not 9 a.m. on a Saturday and the line isn’t stretching down Parkman.
There used to be two cashiers to keep things moving, but I haven’t seen that in ages. I find myself longing for the Danny and Donato days of Tropical - especially those incredible guava pies - but I know that chapter is closed for good.

You have no idea how great this place used to be. My heart aches for the sense of community that was lost. It’s not the same, and it never will be again. But this was once the very heart if Los Angeles.

Danny’s Breakfast was killer and love the vibe of this place. Next time I’ll be jumping on the pastries. Pumped for it
