I went there with my daughter because she loves Mexican food from Los Angeles. We went early in the morning but sadly the "carnitas" were not ready. My daughter had the chilaquiles plate and they were just ok. I had the machaca plate which was not anything to rave about. The food is ok, the prices a bit high but the atmosphere was nice. It's probably a better place for dinner and drinks.

First of all this place is definitely a hidden gem right in the heart of east Los Angeles and it has the most amazing ambiance , very cozy I had the Chilaquiles with pollo and my wife had the pollo Milanesa both dishes did not disappoint !! Pricing was reasonable and the staff was great up for me

Yesterday my wife, daughter, granddaughter and six friends had lunch here.... Only two ( my daughter and granddaughter) ate without complaint.... Everyone else said that they didn't enjoy the food and would never eat here again

First time eating here. I felt welcomed and appreciated as a customer. I ordered the chilaquiles rojos without eggs or meat (although the ribeye beef as an extra sounded most tempting--maybe next time). For me, the flavors of the chilaquiles, refried beans, and pan-roasted potatoes balanced nicely. The sauce was spicy enough to be interesting without being fiery, and the portion size was perfect--not too much or too little.I had the Jamaica to go with it, and I liked it too--rich flavor and not overly-sweetened.Our waitress, Amanda, was attentive and patient and had good knowledge of whichever menu items we asked about.Although there is a small parking lot next to the restaurant, parking is generally limited in this area, so be prepared to walk a bit if the lot is full. (Coincidentally, El Gallo is a fine, long-established bakery across the street for those who'd like to take some real treats home.)Overall, a very nice experience, and I would recommend Dame Veneno for anyone looking for a good place to enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch.

Great little restaurant! Clean, generous portions, good ambiance, and great grilled food with fresh sides and delicious, toasted bolillo rolls for the tortas. We were meeting old friends for lunch and my husband knew El Gallo Grill from growing up in the neighborhood. It was good to see it is still serving the community. And Jesus did an amazing job as the "everything" man. Give him a raise!

We picked this restaurant after a baseball game at the East LA College after seeing the 4 stars on Yelp. We should have read the recent reviews. First of all it wasn't busy at lunch and then I noticed a "B" rating on the window before we walked in, but still decided to give it a try. There was one waitress who was very nice, but it took a very long time to order and an even longer, I mean longer, as in 50 minutes to get our food! My husband asked 2 times and was told it's almost done. The waitress never came over to let us know the status, so he had to go up to the counter and ask. I ordered a chicken tostada and I really wish I would have taken a picture for what I got for $15.50. I was shocked when the waitress finally brought me my tostada. It was the size of 1 corn tortilla, flat and not even crispy. It had a small amount of beans, 8 slices of chicken, small chunks of tomatoes and a little bit of lettuce thrown on top. It needed salsa to add some type of taste to it. Not what I imagined I would get for $15.50! Way overpriced! It was cold and bland. My husband and son each ordered a meat plate (can't remember the name) and for $22.00 each plate, it was small as well and the meat was chopped up way to small, it was chewy on my son's entree and it needed salsa for flavoring. We also ordered a side of guacamole, which actually ended up being the best thing we ate. I had to keep asking for napkins and a refill of salsa that never arrived for my entree. I used my son's napkin after he was finished to clean my hands. After the entrees were served, someone came over to our table and apologized for the food taking a while. He explained he was teaching someone new and wanted the food to be perfect...well for what we were served 50 minutes is unacceptable!

Ever since Felipe, the chef, left, as well as the sisters who were the waitresses, service has gone down. Nobody ordered extra tortillas since we had tacos but we were charged $5. We came to realize that the charge was for 2 tostadas that we asked for to accompany an order of ceviche. They don't include tostadas in ceviche, or for that matter crackers, like the civilized world does, so we had to pay extra for those 2 tostadas. What?!? The food was bland or salty, no inbetween. And of course, you get to choose from rice or beans. RICE OR BEANS? Do they know how cheap rice and beans are in bulk? One order was really late so everything got cold while we waited for EVERYONE to be served so we could all eat at the same time. We have had so many get togethers here, birthdays, graduations, Father's Days, and we want to support the community, not anymore.

I rarely leave yelp reviews, but my family and I had a bad dining experience. We hadn't been back since Felipe and the staff left. Felipe was a master chef- the way he grilled the meat was incredible. My son in law ordered a filet mignon plate that was low on flavor and heavy with cheese topping. The plate arrived much later than all of our plates because they burned the meat the first time around. The rice was over cooked. I ordered a shrimp ceviche that was bland. I assumed it came with tostadas and requested some. When I looked at the bill we were charged $5 for extra tortillas- the tostadas that tasted like Los Pericos tostadas. My mother in law ordered a container for her beans to take home- the waitress misunderstood and gave her an extra scoop in the to go container and we were charged extra! Their meat plates are not cheap- save your money and go elsewhere. What a disappointment, I loved the place! My family celebrated birthdays and graduations here before the pandemic. 5 stars when Felipe was there, 1 star now.

I never write 1 star reviews, but don't waste your time with El Gallo Grill. Ever since Felipe and the previous staff left, this place has not been the same. We used to go in regularly before the pandemic and the carne asada used to have a signature wood fire taste that you do not find at other places. The previous chef, Felipe, was a master of his craft. Don't know why he left. Now they have new people. Oh, and the owner was not happy when I asked about Felipe. Says a lot about the state of their restaurant now. Don't let owners responses on Yelp fool you! It's not good. What a shame!
