I had honestly avoided checking out Helms Bakery after seeing early reviews about how overpriced things were, but this weekend I decided to grab lunch anyway, and I'm so glad I did.
First of all, the prices are average for Los Angeles. I experienced no sticker shock. The jambon beurre sandwich was filling and worth it (although it could have had more cornichons for my taste.)
I was pleasantly surprised by the expansive market inside the space. I will surely be back to get unique gifts and fun snacks. If it hadn't been crowded inside, I could have browsed for a while.
Despite the crowd, seating was easy to find on the patio, and the service was pleasant! All in all a nice experience.
Great spot to enjoy a delicious pastry, food or just relaxed and unwind with a drink.
A fun reimagining of this space
Went early around 8ish and not busy at the shop, lots of parking and food was excellent. Owner is Japanese so the store has much Japanese food and products. Enjoyed my baked goods and matcha. Will definitely come back and the croissant bread pudding is excellent and should have gotten another piece.
Do NOT get the breakfast burrito—it was really bad. The coffee was good but overpriced ($7 cold brew). Atmosphere and place itself is cute. In hindsight should have got baked goods but I was hungry and wanted something more substantial. I will prob not return as I’m scarred from that burrito.
A blast from the past for anyone who grew up in the L A Basin during the pre-homeless encampment days … walking through the cavernous building, you can almost hear the chorus of machinery kneading, baking, slicing and packing endless loaves of bread or imagine the conveyor of fresh doughnuts being fried and frosted long before the Krispy Kreme shops appeared.

Hard to choose what to eat at this place because everything looks so good! The coffee is delicious. The vibe is awesome. Amazing historical building and area. Fun cute and inexpensive souvenirs and food items also.
Easy to park. Visited the Helms Bakery. Wide selection. Delicious drip coffee. Lots of fun foods and items to peruse and shop for. Friendly staff. Nice outdoor seating. Highly recommend.
The donut and bread were delicious. Not so much like the ones we had as children from the Helms truck, but really delicious.

The Helms Bakery District used to be a real bakery called Helms Bakery. It is a city or two blocks long and it was always huge. They made all sorts of baked products, mostly bread. They had trucks that would go through the City the sell their products. Those days are long gone and for years, Helms just sat there empty and falling apart.
About 20 years ago they started to work on it. It is not owned by Helms. It is now an upper class shopping area with about 5 or 6 eateries, some great, some not.
The place is super nice to walk and just go through the furniture stores and look for a restaurant you might want to try. We love the Father's Office. They have great sandwiches and burgers. They really are like a beer bar with lots of craft beers on tap.
They have a lighting store which is wonderful, but expensive as are all the furniture stores. But you can get things here you will not find elsewhere.
It is pet friendly. The service at at all the places we have been to is great. Everyone is friendly and knows their business and what they have in stock.
Parkin is in their lot and is free. Have fun.
Most places here are pretty great, but the Helms Bakery drags it all down with its terrible business model and unreliable and unpredictable offerings.
Here’s our experience at the bakery Cafe..
On Wednesday November 27th we drove one hour and 14 minutes to get to this place that was recommended by a friend. When we opened the door a lady told us that they were selling only coffee at that moment due to the thanksgiving celebration the next day. We walked in to look around and all the shelves were empty while in the back of the shop the bakers were working hard baking all the goodies. The saddest part was having a great smell surrounding us while watching all that empty shop. We dove a very long distance excited to bring back home a lot of good stuff and we left empty handed! What came next? An other long drive of one hour and 35 minutes back home 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻.
Beautiful place and space, so glad they are open again.
Get ready for a mouthwatering adventure! The Helms Bakery has opened its doors again, and I’ve already paid two delightful visits! With an incredible array of food options, there’s so much to savor. I kicked things off at the bakery section, and let me tell you, the cookie selection, cakes, pies, and breads are absolutely out of this world!
I was thrilled to finally try the chipless cookies”delish”! Now, there's one specific bread that has stolen my heart, but I’m afraid to mention it… I fear it might vanish before my next visit! Trust me, it’s beyond incredible!
The cherry on top? The staff! Professional, friendly, and engaging, they create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Special shoutout to Elliotte, whose vibrant energy and top-notch customer service perfectly match the exceptional quality and flavor of the food. Don’t miss out on this culinary gem!
