Amazing culinary performance by Chef Gary Menes and assistants. Completely unlike (and arguably superior to) most fine dining experiences in its ambiance and focus. By foregrounding vegetables alongside the optional meat dishes, it's as though Menes is making a case that the veggies can hold their own. We were convinced!

The Evening at Le Comptoir was a truly incredible dining experience. I commented that if I were a Michelin star chef, I can't think of a better way to share my craft than to host a small group of interested guests each night to deliver an intimate, deliberate experience. The food was fantastic, and watching Chef plate it up each course with deliberate effort and focus was really delightful. Thank you for such a fun night!

A perfect experience. We wouldn't change a thing. Every part of each dish was thoughtful, balanced, and out of this world delicious. Dining at Le Comptoir will be a memory my partner and I cherish forever.

I went there for the escargot and truffle gnocchi both are gone from the current menu. So based on staff recommendations tried soup of the day, burger and the apricot pie . The meal was descent but it was something that you can find anywhere

I went into Petite Comptoir on a Saturday morning on a whim, as I've lived right around the corner and had RARELY seen anyone inside. When I walked by to go to work one morning, there were people eating! I went in and got something small, a slice of Brown Butter cake. It was HEAVENLY. I've never had true butter cake, only Jeni's Gooey Butter Cake, and these two were vastly different and the same. This Butter cake was perfectly moist, with a toothsome crispier crust on the bottom from browning on the cake pan. The top was this soft, slightly subtle vanilla tasting buttery goodness and I ate it very fast. I will be coming back to try the eggs and espresso.

EDIT: went in to try an egg dish and was blown away! Soft French style scrambled egg texture, salty prosciutto, semi sweet, nutty emmentaler cheese on fried sourdough with fresh dill and chives garnished on top. A cappuccino finished off my breakfast and the whole thing was lovely! This place has definitely become my favorite place to eat on Saturday mornings when I'm home alone. Chef Gary Menes is so nice, and I love his interactions with guests.

My recent visit to Le Comptoir was nothing short of magical. The restaurant's ambiance is a delightful blend of rustic charm and elegance, making you feel like you've stepped into a charming French countryside inn. The service was impeccable; the staff was attentive and gracious throughout the evening. The food, oh la la! Every dish was a masterpiece. The escargot, rich and buttery, was a true delight. The service was prompt, and our sommelier recommended the perfect wine to complement our meal. Le Comptoir is a haven for food enthusiasts seeking an authentic French experience.

Small and quaint place inside Hotel Normandie. The food was fine, expected more for how much it cost. It became a bit repetitive at some point and I was still hungry afterwards. Without any add-ons, it seemed to be a fully vegetarian menu.

Wonderful dining at one of the first restaurants in LA to receive a Michelin star we they came in back in 2019. Chef Gary Menes trained under great chefs through out NYC and France. The 8 course meal was phenomenal. Each course was independent and special. The flavors were amazing. Small intimate space -counter seating-so u can watch the magic. Highly recommend.

What a memorable evening! We went to celebrate my daughter's birthday. She's a vegetarian so this was the perfect choice. The chef is a perfectionist so everything was not only well prepared, it was beautiful too. Watching the coordination in the kitchen was amazing. We added the wine pairing and totally enjoyed the wines also. This restaurant is for anyone that wants well prepared, seasonal food.

Avoid this place at all costs. Comically overpriced. Deeply uninspired food with nonsensical wine pairings; both of which end up being served at room temperature. Dishes and wine were not explained. Prepare to arrive on time, be ushered to the hotel lobby, and then wait for 30 minutes with no information.

This chef is obviously passionate, wildly confident, and one hell of a salesman (he got me really excited for the meal!) with an end product that doesn’t match the pitch. He seems to be resting on his laurels from when La Comptoir was a hot pop up in 2015 (?). He is either not receiving or unwilling to accept real feedback, and is very clearly working in an echo chamber.

The website describes the restaurant as one that “challenges the white tablecloth notion of fine dining” but the execution feels like a restaurant stuck in the middle, and struggling to find its identity. Example: a vegetable plate using home grown seasonal vegetables sounds great… why is that plate 42 touches (this was communicated to us)? And why are we using tweezers? If these vegetables were actually fresh and actually from the garden: they should speak for themselves. This should be simple. By the time this dish came out it was room temperature, and any life these vegetables had was long gone.

I’ve had the privilege of some truly incredible dining experiences: Alinea (***), Grace (***), Schwa (*)… I typically don’t leave reviews when things are bad but I’ve never paid so much for a meal ($1100) [markedly more than the aforementioned restaurants] and woke up the next morning feeling so fleeced.

I’m leaving this objective feedback in the hopes that this place can turn it around, because while this experience as it stands is deeply underwhelming, it could be something special if they can deliver on the concept that their pitch promises.

Chef Menes is a consummate professional. The tasting menu here is amongst the best that L.A. has to offer. Everything dish was thoughtfully conceived, meticulously prepared and tasted delicious.
