Soba here is great (loved the duck especially) and the service is really fast. Got a fantastic lemon sour which I haven't had since I went to Japan. Also just such a cute atmosphere; perfect for chats with friends and date nights

We decided to try out SOBAR as it was close by to our stay while in LA
It was a great chance as the food was great. Everything was excellent to include our communication with other patrons
The food was awesome and we plan to go there again before we leave LA

I had pretty bad cravings of soba cold noodles. I’m gluten free and the food wasn’t only delicious but the staff were very accommodating and kind. We will be back!

I had high hopes, but was not convinced about the concept of high end soba restaurant. We had Ribeye Niku Soba and Kakiage Soba. The flavor and presentation were acceptable, and I appreciated the attempts to elevate the dishes with high quality protein. But the soba noodles themselves were not that much different from the grocery bought home cooking. It was strange that the soba in Kakiage Soba were in small pieces, about 2 inches long, which made it hard to slurp like traditional way.

We were there on a Friday dinner but the place was only half filled. The servers seemed to not really care about the food. West LA could use a good soba restaurant, but I'm not sure that this will last.

Apparently this place is reservations only. I made a reservation the same day and they told me they can't take any more reservations due to soba noodles limitations. I don't know why they don't state reservations only when it is reservations only and also take reservations when they can't accommodate. Probably will never try this place.

The atmosphere is clean and minimal, centered around a U-shaped bar that adds a welcoming touch. Near the entrance, a display of sake bottles sets the tone, offering a glimpse into the restaurant’s curated taste. It feels like a great spot for a solo meal, especially if you’re looking for something calm and thoughtfully prepared.

We visited for a weekday lunch. With only one chef on duty, the service was understandably a bit slow, but still attentive.

We ordered the special appetizer plate, along with two types of zaru soba — one with shiso sauce and the other with tororo. While the appetizer plate felt slightly overpriced given the portion size, I appreciated the care put into each item. That said, the grilled rice ball and salmon could’ve been warmer — possibly a result of limited staffing.

The soba itself was excellent, with a pleasantly firm and tangy texture. The shiso sauce, however, leaned a bit too salty and thick for my taste, whereas the tororo sauce was well-balanced in both flavor and texture. After finishing the noodles, we asked for sobayu (hot water mixed with buckwheat flour), and once again, the shiso dipping sauce remained too salty to enjoy even when diluted — but the tororo sauce paired beautifully with it, enhanced by the delicate sweetness of fresh wasabi.

SOBAR is one of those restaurants that I feel are gifts to the community. When they conceived their plan to open a traditional Japanese style hand-crafted buckwheat made-to-order noodle restaurant, they knew they were filling a space/meeting a need that didn't exist, but were going to just open and let people discover what they were missing on their radar. As a chef I appreciate aspects of a restaurant that some say are irrelevant to the average diner, but when I eat out, I'm just like the average diner: Hungry and looking for something good that's not a rip off. SOBAR's food is precise but not precious, and much better than good, but even more noteworthy is their hospitality. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with them over lunch and the FOH person (Waiter/bartender/MGR.?) James couldn't have been more gracious, patient with my questions about everything and intent on seeing that we had a great experience. SOBAR, thank you for just being.

Tried the kamo negi soba at SOBAR and was really impressed. The duck was tender and flavorful, and the broth had a deep, smoky umami that brought everything together. The noodles had great texture and held up well. It’s clear they care about the details here — definitely worth a visit if you’re into soba.

They have very authentic way of cooking soba. Everyone, please try. I was too excited to eat so I forgot to take photos but all their appetizer, drinks, soba and deserts are good.

The best soba in LA, hands down. Getting directly to the point, we tried the Scallop Shiso Maze Soba and the Kamo Negi Soba. They were completely different but equally superbly delicious. The latter was a very classical soba with rich duck broth done just right vs the former was a brilliant innovation - a refreshing pesto-like broth infused with shiso together with scallops and mushrooms full of umami.
The appetizers - Dashi Simmered Pumpkin and Chicken Kaarage - were excellent as well. Plus very friendly and polite staff. Will come back!

Walking into Sobar you’ll be greeted by friendly staff who are more than happy to share their favorite menu items and sake pairings - just ask. The food is phenomenal - it’s easy to see why they earned a place on the Los Angeles 101 best restaurants. If you visited already and didn’t try the appetizer sampler book your next reservation for tomorrow and correct the error. Will be adding this place to our favorite places to bring friends.
