Man has this place gone down hill.
Rice was falling apart and taste worst than buffet sushi.

To me, this place is the GOAT! Not because they have the best sushi necessarily but, because of the value and consistency they offer. I like to describe Sugarfish as the In N Out of the sushi world. I love In N Out and usually end up there when I want a burger. I mean there are better burgers out there for sure but, not for the price point. No matter which In N Out I go to, I know what I'm going to get because they're consistent and reliable.
Sugarfish is both mine and my daughter's favorite restaurant. 95% of the time we want sushi, we end up here and she wants sushi a lot so we're regulars at this location and the Studio City location. There's just something special about the warm loosely packed rice on the cold fish that is so satisfying. Its the reason I can't stand eating the premade sushi you can buy at Wholefoods. The rice is always cold, hard and dense. I'm getting hungry just writing this review.

I visited Sugarfish by chance on 21-Apr-2025, as I was staying at a nearby hotel whilst visiting DTLA. I love sushi, and was drawn by the online recommendations. My wife and I had lunch, and we did one of the Omakase options. The food is extremely good, and is one of the best sushis we have eaten anywhere in the world. What I would like to highlight is the practice of not requiring a tip, and making sure that their servers are compensated fairly. There is not even a section to add tips in the credit card printout. The cost of servers' wages is already factored in to the cost of the meal on the menu, and a fixed fee of 16%. Either way, this is informed ahead of time, which is a similar practice by almost all other countries in the world. I am very supportive of this approach, and I hope that Sugarfish continues to maintain this practice. I understand that not all US restaurants prefer this approach, as Sugarfish is the first restaurant I have been to in US that practices this. I will reward the good service and good food by being a loyal customer and returning again when I am visiting DTLA.

My absolute favorite sushi!
Always on point! Our server was so kind, thanks Mitchell.
The worst sushi experience ever.
The rice completely fell apart—it wasn’t even formed properly.
The salmon and tuna on the sushi were either paper-thin or completely shredded.
It’s hard to believe the kitchen would serve sushi in such a terrible state.

16% fee added to your bill? Greedflation at its finest👍🏼
they wont seat you until your whole group’s present - pretty inflexible considering how the restaurant’s more than half empty at peak lunch hour (they only accept walk-ins) our server was pretty apologetic and said they have strict corporate guidelines to adhere to.
the food was solid. im a sushi snob in search for a quick bite in DTLA before catching a movie.. i had low to no expectations for a casual sushi joint in america but WOW the nigiris were EXCELLENT. fish was well-aged resulting in perfect texture and sweetness. rice had the right balance of shari, and wasnt too tightly packed.
highly recommend the chutoro, uni, seabream, amaebi and lobster nigiris. oh and the cold ankimo sashimi was TO DIE FOR.

Tried the Don’t Think Just Eat Omakase, all the pieces were pretty good quality with nice warm rice. The ponzu is pretty sour and certain items come covered in it, so if you’re adverse to that flavor, you may want to request a different seasoning. I also was not a fan of the unagi, which was the finale, as it was really powdery. Overall, enjoy the atmosphere and the selection. Next time I will perhaps select the specific pieces I loved like the pink lobster, tuna cuts, and scallop!

The price wasn’t bad. Nigiri and hand rolls were subpar. The fish was decent, but every single piece had rice falling apart and over sauced on the pieces with sauce.
