I was there today and I ordered the spicy pork chops with chow mein. The pork chops were horrible, way to much fat on them. Definitely not coming back

Place was busy so I expected the food to be a little better. Food arrived relatively quickly in heaping portions - however it was all dry and bland. Fried rice was greasy yet flavorless. Added the chilli oil as recommended, then it became spicy and greasy. Not great at all.
Even though I was super hungry going in, I couldn't bring myself to eat it all. Thank God for the toast for helping me feel a bit more full.
The Vietnamese iced coffee was decent. Service was great, very friendly staff.

I love a small local business with heart, and this one happens to serve really good food. It’s my first stop anytime I’m staying in downtown.

The opening hour is fake. I went there tonight but it was closed.
The interior of Uncle John's embraces a nostalgic diner-meets-rustic-kitchen aesthetic. Think warm wood tones, comfortable booths, and walls adorned with local art or vintage photographs. The lighting is soft and welcoming, particularly in the mornings, making it an excellent spot for a quiet breakfast or catching up with a friend over coffee.
While the cafe can get busy—especially during weekend brunch rushes—the noise level remains pleasant. It manages to maintain a lively buzz without being overwhelming, which speaks volumes about its steady, loyal clientele. It’s casual, comfortable, and immediately puts you at ease.

One of my favorite places to eat in downtown
It's a fantastic mix of American diner and Asian food. The spicy pork chops are absolutely delicious. The portion sizes are also really nice.

This is definitely NOT the medium well steak I ordered. 🤢🤮 It's also waaay too salty. The fried rice is super bland, so are the eggs. Just threw $22 in the trash. 🗑 You can count on me not to come back here ever again - which is never a good thing for a local.

Update 10/5: I've literally tried 5 other Pho places since this chasing this flavor and nothing comes close. This is the best Pho I've ever had.
The service was amazing and the staff was helpful and nice. Their wings are cooked beautifully and the the pho I will be dreaming about for weeks or until I come back. Highly recommend

Honestly one of the best breakfasts I've had in LA! That HK french toast with a little chilli oil... wow.

Great American and Chinese diner food served with tons of character and charm. Note that, as of 2025, Uncle John’s has moved around the corner to 8th and Olive.
