Something has changed. The food is not that great, no more. The atmosphere is amazing, but good and service has gone down hill. Not sure why.

AD-VENTURE

Rumor has it they hired a new shift for the restaurant who used to be with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry. So let's hold out hope that there's a new star in town.

Today, my family and I dined at the restaurant at Hotel Bel-Air for the first time. Let's begin with the customer service. Our first impression was positive as we were warmly greeted upon arrival and given the option of sitting inside or outside, which we appreciated. While the food was good, it didn't quite reach the level of spectacular. I ordered the black truffle pasta, which I found to be a bit too buttery and in need of more flavor. On the other hand, the cucumber drink with tequila was absolutely amazing and I can understand why it's a specialty of the house. We requested the lobster pasta to be made with shrimp instead, but unfortunately, it was lacking in shrimp. However, none of these issues were as bothersome as the valet attendants informing my husband about a minimum tip. They explicitly told him that a $20 tip was the minimum. Although spending $800 on dinner means that $20 wouldn't make a significant difference, it's the principle of the matter. I would prefer if they simply charged $20 for valet and allowed us to tip as we see fit, rather than dictating the minimum amount. Would I recommend this place? Well, if you happen to be passing by and want to grab a meal, then sure. However, overall, it's nothing particularly special.

Extrapolations

Thanksgiving Dinner was a disappointment. The portions were small, the turkey was sliced too thick and the dark meat was way too dried out and stringy. I sent my plate back and they gave me another plate that had about 1/2 the portion of turkey as the first plate! And the dark meat was just as dried and stringy! The side dishes of carrots, Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes were good but I would have liked to see additional cranberry sauce, gravy, and stuffing dishes on the side as well. You’re there to eat well! The desserts were subpar. The pies were in the form of little tarts which is mostly pie crust with very little filling-serve a regular pie! The ice cream was good. The service was excellent up until the end of dinner when it took them over 15 minutes to clear our plates! Our utensils were set at 3:15 so there was no excuse. The manager kept walking by and did nothing. The hotel atmosphere was amazing overall. I’m sorry to say for paying $200+ pp for my meal, it was not worth it. Have dinks there then go elsewhere.

The review is for the restaurant only. This place used to be great years ago, it’s not anymore, to say the least. The service is inexistent and useless; I’m still waiting for my water and hot sauce; they never checked on us, and it took them 30 minutes to take our order. You get more attention in almost any other restaurant. But the food manages to be even worse than the service. My smoked salmon Benedict was just awful; I barely touched it (weird pieces of nerves, and they dropped some eggshells…). It gave me a stomachache too, so be careful. Other dishes were as bad as this one.The price is outrageous for the quality of the meal, but any price would be outrageous, since the food and service are just terrible.Again, it used to be a great place, but they totally dropped the ball, do yourself a favor and go to the Beverly Hills hotel instead if you’re looking for a fancy meal.

I visited the Bel Air Hotel for my birthday on Saturday, and I must say that our server, Juan, was exceptional. He went above and beyond to make our experience wonderful. Providing fantastic menu recommendations, he was incredibly hospitable. Our orders included Huevos Rancheros, a pastry basket, and French press coffee, all of which were delightful. Juan surprised us with a dessert, crème brûlée. It's a must have from their dessert menu! I have to say the seasonal spice muffin from the pastry basket was my favorite. If you're seeking fine dining and an incredible ambiance, I highly recommend the Bel Air Hotel. I'll surely return. Thank you, Juan, for your outstanding service!
