Best bbq in California
I’ve had bbq coast to coast. I consider myself a bit of a pro judge without really being one. This is in the top 10% of places I’ve been. The location was a touch sketchy, having not been to Modesto ever, I’m not sure if it’s the neighborhood or the travel to it but something felt odd. The restaurant itself was clean and inviting, the staff was super friendly and helpful picking out our meals. The food itself was pretty tasty. They did break my cardinal rule for bbq though. The food came pre sauced. Luckily the sauce was good. The meat was tender, and the portion was huge for the price. The sides were tasty too. By far the tri tip was the winner. It’s mostly a regional thing, but places that do it right are hard to come by. It was definitely the star of the meats I chose.
On the other side of the tracks. Parking is good. Property is old but clean. Reception was very friendly. Menu is typical BBQ along with sides I call comfort foods. I had the trip tip my Associate the ribs. Great flavors, well prepared. Had the collard greens which were outstanding with a bit of zing. The black eyed peas were good. Value solid.
Driving from SF to Yosemite, we got bored and hungry. Pulled off at random, drove along a random main road and found this place; it does not look inspiring from outside, what we in the UK would call a truckstop (or even a "greasy-spoon". However time was pressing so in we went. Wow! What a friendly set up. I appreciate the pair i/c were intrigued by our English accents, but we had Ritz-style attention. Guidance about the menu - we were about to order far too much! Excellent beans dish, chicken thing too. We shared the famous peach cobbler (that was how we Googled back here) great. Hope they remember us! PS toilet needs a smarten-up!
To me there is no point in making BBQ meat if it doesn't have a smoky flavor all through the meat itself and not just in the sauce. The ribs in this joint have no hint of smoky taste. They are overwhelmed by a sweet BBQ sauce, but the meat itself is pretty tasteless. Some folks love BBQ sauce, this is provided in great abundance on all orders including the pulled pork. For me it is too much and too sweet. The place is a bit run down and the sides are pretty good. There is a counter where you order food and then seating is vintage vinyl ( circa 1950s?) I don't care about any of that but I want smoky in every bite of my Q or else it's a waste of time.
I stopped by here while passing through Modesto. The place looked a bit shabby from the outside and inside the decor needs a bit of work too, but it certainly was a friendly place. It was quite late so it wasn't that busy and I was served very quickly. I had a combo of super tender and smoky ribs and brisket. The BBQ sauce was a tiny bit too sweet for me. I had it with sides of beans and really good candied yams. They don't serve beer so I had a Diet Coke, which was enormous. The check came to $21 before tip, which I thought was pretty reasonable. Worth a visit if you're after BBQ in Modesto.
Everything we had was smoked to perfection. Sides were delicious. Wish they had beer. Reportedly good cobbler but too full to try it. Will have to have the cobbler first next time.
I had a brisket sandwich but it was full of sauce that was too sweet. Potato salad was very full of mayo. Muffin was good!
The food was very very good. Tried the tri tip, ribs, sausage, pulled pork. We wanted brisket but it wasn't ready. Hubby got hot bbq sauce . It was very very hot. Will be back
We are so happy we came across this place! Though it doesn't look like much from the outside (with its large smoker parked out front), and the inside isn't much better, (very simple seating, but clean) this place has great BBQ. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich ($9) and a half-rack ribs ($15)....so moist and delicious! They were smoked to a "fall of the bone" perfection. You get to choose your type of sauce. We had mild (it's on the sweet side) and medium (had a slight kick of roasted pepper). Plus, we ordered sides of mac and cheese (small $1.50) and coleslaw (same $). Mac and cheese had a nice peppery bite to its thick, yet dry consistency and the coleslaw was creamy and sweet. The server was helpful and friendly, it looked like a family fun business....so we will be back!

I love bbq so I'm not sure why it took me this long to come here. I ordered the brisket, ribs, Mac n cheese and yams. This brisket is soooooo good. The ribs weren't bad either but the sauce was delicious. I definitely would order the brisket again and again and again. I do want to try the tri tip next. The location isn't amazing but it doesn't bother me, apparently for some it does. It's simple inside but I wasn't expecting anything fancy. I was expecting good bbq and that's what I got.
The raving reviews for this place is false or maybe people do not really know about food?? This is boiled chicken with BBQ sauce only. Kind of expensive for a half chicken no sides is $12.80 and a skinny chicken, lots of bones and skin. We eat neither. Dog was happy. When we drove by we saw their big BBQ wagon but did not see anyone using it so I asked if their chicken I was orderng was indeed BBQ on the grill out side. Jeremy laughed and said yes, however it was not. I asked that the BBQ sauce be in a cup and chicken as is, so obviously we have a clear taste of the chicken without the sauce. It is fooling customers unknown to this fact. I can BBQ chicken in our back yard but sometimes when we have to drive to somewhere it is so great to get a healthy dish of BBQ chicken to go but unfortunatey they did not tell the truth. I so wanted them to be a great BBQ to go place but it failed with simple honesty.
Stopped and Doc's and had his pulled pork, ribs, chicken and tri-tip...it was all good, but the chicken and pulled pork stood out. The chicken was moist, tender, and tasty. Black eyed peas, greens, and yams made great side dishes, and my wife and I would order the yams over and over and over.
Its refreshing to find a roadside BBQ spot like doc q's. the staff is really friendly and the food is excellent. a huge portion for about $14. the prices. Q's BBQ restaurant or rollback prices. everytime I'm in the Modesto area I make sure to make a stop at doc q's. and he makes his own links which I really like.
Oh, yes, a tri-tip sandwich with sauce, and no knife needed. This place is 2 blocks of highway 99 in Modesto. It is nothing fancy, and that is ok with me. I just wanted a tasty BBQ sandwich, cole sla, and a Coke. That is what I got !
