The short: come for the sandwiches. Take an almond croissant to go. Retoast it slightly at home to crisp it up again. Pray it has tons of that delicious frangipane. And enjoy!
Update: bummed to find the almond croissant this time was pretty scant on the frangipane. The inconsistency of amount of frangipane is disappointing knowing that when there's a lot these things are heavenly.
The whole story: Oh bree'osh, we have been coming back to you for years now! When we first tried here maybe a year before COVID (when it was still just one location at montecito and everything still made by hand from what we understand from the owners) it was by far the best croissant and almond croissant in California. Even better than fournee who people rave about in the bay! During COVID when we stayed in SB for a couple months, we were back almost weekly for both of these and the buckwheat ciabatta (at the time only made on Fridays).
Sadly, it seems like this has been changing every time we come. After the 2nd location opened and it looks like they got a machine to help scale croissant production it just wasn't the same. Still good but not nearly the same based on the amount of layers, airiness, and crispy flakiness the croissants used to have.
We still come almost every time we visit Santa Barbara. They're good but not the best like before.
Would recommend still the egg mushroom gruyere croissant sandwich and avocado tartine in the buckwheat ciabatta. Tastes like the quality of ingredients have changed a bit but definitely still solid. Lots of butter in the croissant to make it mm mm . The tartine is more interesting for those who like a different sourdough-y like taste but with a spingey and crispy bread rather than rustic. Comes with avocado, watermelon radishes, micro greens (half mixed with arugula btw), pumpkin seeds and lemon vinaigrette with coarse salt. Was a little light on the vinaigrette this time (which is my fave part) but also generous on greens as requested. Would say this was the star.
Vegetarian options: Delish mushroom croissant sandwich and avocado tartine.

We tried their breakfast sandwich and it was amazing! Lattes were perfect. The ladies working there are so sweet and attentive. Will come back next time we are in the area.

The croissants have the most beautiful laminations, add mushrooms to the croissant breakfast sandwich ?

I asked them to put the honey in the shots of my latte so it wouldn’t go to the bottom and they did it anyways. Now I’m sucking honey through the straw. The worker tried to say honey freezes but it doesn’t when it’s melted properly in the shot. I order this drink often and they did it wrong on purpose. I usually make this at home in LA and it doesn’t ever stick to the bottom of my cup they just didn’t do it correctly.
Amazing coffee and pastries

Pleasant counter service, weak drip coffee, $3 for a small coffee, tasty looking pastries, limited seating inside and outside, no public restrooms.

The yellow store frount with their kind staff will welcome you with a very nice smile!
There is a wonderful breakfast menu and beautiful pastries.
There are about 4 to 5 tables outside so if you are looking to dine in with a larger group I would make sure to have plenty of time or plan a picnic near the beach! Perfect place to have morning coffee with a friend.

This place is amazing! I love their Croque Madame and all of their pastries. I do wish that the Monicito location served on plates instead of in togo boxes. That is my only complaint. Otherwise, the staff & food are over the top fabulous!

The brioche is delicious, no doubt. But overall the place was disappointing. The beignets looks’ deceive — supposedly custard filled had less than a tiny dab of filling. Pricing high for what is served. There is no dine in option so all containers are throw-away and cutlery single use plastic. I would not go again.

Super friendly staff. Very busy and still very prompt for getting food/drinks out. Delicious and creamy espresso and the smoked salmon tartine was exactly what I was craving - ciabatta bread with smeared goat cheese on it was absolutely fantastic.
