Mid at best. Got the love plate last night for take out. Took 30+ min when the restaurant wasn’t busy. The quality of the fish was lacking. Ok in a roll, but the nigiri did not taste good. Not like the fish was off, but the quality, especially for the west coast, was disappointing to say the least. Was one of the only places open late. If you do eat here, my suggestion would be to stick to rolls. Or skip it.

First time visited Monterey and decided to have sushi for dinner. Randomly walked in this restaurant and their food is amazing! The salmon belly literally melted in my mouth! Staffs are kind and friendly. Had a great dinner here. Will definitely come again when we’re back in town.

if u watched FX’s series The Bear, the part when cousin told the crew they will make someone’s first visit to the restaurant an unforgettable experience, that’s what i got from the Kuma gang. (interestingly kuma meant bear in japanese lol)
the nice atmos, the splendid food, and all the little extra effort from the chef and the funny server dude, together they really made me and my partner’s night.
feel free to visit this cool spot when u’re in Monterey! i definitely would if im back in town next time!

We had a few vegetarian Sushi and was very delicious. Unfortunately their miso soup has fish sauce so not vegan. They were out of tomatoes completely so had to exchange with sweet potatoes. However the server was very nice to inform us and help us swap options. Would recommend this place in Monterey.

My brother and I were back in Monterey.... as adults, for family business. We both now live on the East Coast, but spent many a summer in Monterey/Seaside as children when our Father was stationed at Fort Ord. We researched the best sushi restaurants in Monterey, and Kuma was highly rated. We had a great time at dinner! Parking was a challenge, but we enjoyed the relatively short walk from our coveted on-street parking space to the restaurant.... We're East Coasters now, afterall! The menu was extensive with a great selection of sushi - maki, nigiri, and we were very lucky that they had excellent, fresh uni the night we were there. Because it is so coveted, uni (sea urchin) can be and was expensive. We couldn't help ourselves, we went for it and had 2 whole orders. Delicious - just a little $$$ painful, but well worth it! The service was lovely, and we really enjoyed our after dinner chat with one of the owners. Part of the charm for us was that Kuma is a casual, lively restaurant. Not at all formal, quiet, or stuffy as many upscale Japanese and sushi restaurants can be. I am looking forward to my next business trip to Monterey/Seaside later this month and another wonderful meal at Kuma.
