The Shabuway has closed, replaced with a Udon restaurant. Don’t come to this place if you’re looking for Shabuway!!

It's too bad this Shabuway location closed down because the service at the San Jose location is absolutely horrendous. I would stop by here for Japanese shabu cravings since it was near my home, and the shabu is pretty good. I guess there is too much hot pot competition on Castro now. I guess this the end of Shabuway for me. There's no way I will ever return to their terrible San Jose location, and I wouldn't go out of my way to get to the San Mateo location.

I've been here several times now - I keep coming back for the Veggie Shabu Shabu. Maybe not the best value given that you're paying $15 for a plate of veggies, but it is a HUGE plate and they give A TON of veggies. The plate is actually overflowing, and if you like mushrooms, you won't be disappointed. At least half of the plate is filled with shiitake, beech, oyster, and enoki mushrooms. So so good. You can pair your shabu entree with a number of different broths. I went with the veggie broth (trying to eat more plant based these days) and thought it was quite good. Good amount of flavor, and most importantly, not too salty!! I always save the soup for last. By then, it's absorbed all of that delicious mushroom flavor, and you can drink to your heart's content :) Not sure if they do soup refills, but it wouldn't hurt to ask! There's another Shabuway in West San Jose near Mitsuwa. I've been to that location too but the serving size is far less generous. And they charge more. So definitely come to this one!

The food was okay but the service was terrible. We had AYCE combo A. It was a little bit more expensive compared to other hot pot places. The meat quality was okay for the price range. Nothing special about the soup or the dipping sauce. However, raw egg would be a much better option to have. Besides I would like to have more choices on the veggies.

A recommendable place for shabu shabu. One could choose between counter or table (share the pot in the latter case) and the staff were friendly. Now about the food itself: meat, though might not be called superb, was fresh and tender; a variety of quality veggies was also offered (I chose Californian instead of traditional plate); the ponzu sauce also had a nice and refreshing citrusy touch.

I really want to complain about the service. The waiter was rude and we have to keep asking for water. I don't think I will visit this place again if the service quality was still so terrible.

Worst service that I have ever experienced. Racist and rude. They do not want to get you seated and shout at you.

Excellent place to get food when in a rush. The service is quick, pricing is fair, awesome atmosphere. I highly recommend this spot.

Fun and social with tasty food. Staff could be more attentive and less rigid (refusing to seat a small party because someone was parking a car, meanwhile restaurant was empty, etc)

So dang delicious. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Very clean. Highly recommend for shabu shabu. They have an all you can eat option too! The table sitting next to us showed us it's worth it.

The other hot pot place!

What a pity..... I actually really enjoy the soup base, the dipping sauces ponzu and sesame) and the quality of the meat, but it's hard to give this place a raving review. The service here is incredibly slow (and I hope they will hire someone else so the two poor guys don't have to be dripping sweat running around to serve everyone - which leads to mediocre customer service). Note that you can join the waitlist on Yelp before you arrive by the way. The wait is really quick when you do that. So it seems that if you eat at the bar, it is one pot per person. However, when you get a larger table, it's one pot to share amongst everyone, but thankfully you can do a split pot soup base if you want to. However, each person is expected to order their own plate of meat and veggie combo plate (since the price is per head). I have to say that all their meats are good quality and thinly cut. I think you may have to order extra meat though if you want to be full because the meat dishes are not very large, even the large (when they are so thinly sliced). I'd come again, but just wish some things would change before then.

Nice sliced and fresh meat, I like tunkuzi broth the best. Lamb, kobe beef and pork are all tasty. For sides, I think udon is the best hotpot mate. The only disadvantage is small space and long wait line. Lunch might be better if you don’t want to wait for too long.
