Food is good. Favorite chef Iggy is great. HOWEVER... I had a very bizarre experience eating there last night... I came in about 5:30 and ordered my food - all you can eat from a sushi list menu. Everything good so far. Two other people came in separately sat in the chairs next to me. They ordered their food and ate. We talked for about an hour. The server brought me a bill which included all three tabs. I told the cashier that I had ordered individually and expected to pay for my own meal as I always do and not for the other two. The woman, who said she was the manager, told me that I could not pay individually as it was their policy not to split tabs on three or more people who were apparently together on more than two credit cards. WHAT? I have eaten there many times before, talked to others near me. This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. There were no signs on the wall indicating that if you ate next to other people and collectively tried to pay with more than two credit cards, they would not allow you to do that. The others said they would pay their tabs on a single card. I was off the hook. As far as the manager/server goes, what kind of an intellectual genius would make up and try to "enforce" a policy like that? I've eaten there on and off for years. Make no mistake. I'm never eating there again.
After many years of dining at SGC and moreover, many birthday parties to enjoy their teppan dining as a big family group, we made a reservation for Saturday November 20 for a family member’s 65th birthday celebration. My wife called Wednesday November 10 to make a reservation and asked Sam for the larger teppan table for a party of 12. Sam took her name, wrote down the number of people in our party and confirmed he had all of our information necessary for the reservation. The next day on November 11, my sister-in-law called to confirm we got the large teppan table that seats 12, and the person she spoke to said “oh yes, Said my name, party of 12, we’ll see you on the 20th. On November 15, a final call was made one last time to confirm the reservation, so we thought we were all set. On the date of our reservation, my wife and I arrived first at 5:15pm to check in for the 5:45pm reservation. We noticed immediately when we arrived that the one and only 12 person teppan table we reserved already had a full party just getting started. Obviously, that table would not be ready for our 5:45pm reservation for at least another hour. When we spoke to a hostess, we were told “we no longer take reservations, this is first come, first serve.” She offered that we could sit at the only other large teppan table in the back, but then she was told by another waiter that no other tables in the back were functioning. Then they offered to sit our birthday party at two separate tables… and we said “no, that is why we made a reservation 10 days ago so we could all sit together for the party. The rest of our party arrived just before 5:45 and we asked for the manager, who when we told him of the situation, he said “we stopped taking reservations as of today (November 20).” We reiterated that we made the reservation 10 days ago before you changed your policy and were still taking reservations. He then changed his tune and said “if we’d really made a reservation for you, it would be on some note pad over there with your name and number in your party on it”, so “I don’t know who you talked to.” With the poorest management skills, he took no responsibility at all for the situation because the reservation had been made and reconfirmed twice prior the event. So someone either threw the reservation away earlier in the week or once the restaurant policy changed (that day, based on what he was telling us), they intentionally discarded the “Official Reservation Note Pad” with zero regard for any loyal, return customers that were relying on them to provide the reasonably expected service. After enduring this annoying lack of reasonable service , we thought best to leave and dine elsewhere. While our party of 12 and everyone they know will NEVER return to SGC, and while reservations have now been halted, maybe at least we can warn new potential customers of incompetent and shady restaurant management. I’m sure that those potential customers can use this example of unprofessionalism to think twice before dining here. Who knows what kind of sketchy outcome they might have trying to dine there.
Amazing sushi! Gotta try the Asahi and the Mexican - unique and fantastic!
